whew this is hard to answer because I am male. hehe anyway, maybe this little advise could help.
timing is the great strategy, learn the attitude of your friends to people like "lesbians". from here you could get an idea if the people around you will accept you when you tell the truth. the quicker you tell, the better.
but also, sometimes its better to show the real you, piece by piece or step by step so it wont surprise them totally.

You are right perfect timing is the key, when i told my parents about this, the timing was not good so they got very mad at me. But it is true that parents won't have a hard heart to their children, because i'm out now & my parents is okay with it. =)
