If there's one thing people are lacking in today's fast-paced, hi-tech world, it's meaningful connections with others. Walk down any city street and you'll witness thousands of people all co-existing together in complete solitude. There's little eye contact, few friendly smiles, and an almost absence of initiating new friendships. Fortunately, there is a solution to this social dilemma, and it's something we all have the capacity to do. In order to form meaningful connections with others and reconnect with your own life, all you need to do is laugh.
Positive humor and the act of laughing transcend all language barriers and give people a common ground on which to relate.
please read the whole article if you can, it is very good.
when my husband first came to montreal from barbados he used to great everyone he met on the busy streets with a smile and a hello, this was what he was used to in his country, yet people gave him strange looks and walked away quickly, he couldn't understand, but he did know he had to stop.
Do you greet strangers with a hello and a smile?
How do you react when stranger greet you that way?
Laughter is good for us, we need more ways to to laugh,
|Do you concentrate on the bad things in life or the good?
Can you laugh about most things even the seemingly bad ones?
Young or old, male or female, each of us has an innate capacity for humor and can use laughter, giggles, or smiles to break down emotional walls and reach out to others. As you strive to use humor to create more meaningful connections in your own life, keep the following guidelines in mind.
*****
Positive humor equals a positive state of mind. When your humor is positive, you understand that people need different things at different times in order to be in "good humor." Sometimes we need to laugh, while other times we simply need someone to sit and breathe with us. Positive humor is never hurtful, nor does it degrade a person's spirit. It's always uplifting, and it gives people a temporary release of any negativity they may be harboring.

My mom is a greeter, I swear sometimes I wnder if she ever thinks before she walks up to total strangers and most times strikes up a conversation. I am not so brave I am one who goes about my business and leave others to theirs. But if someone happens to greet me,make eye contact or smiles I always return it. Now days alot of people are basically afraid to make eye contact with others because they never give themselves time to stop smell the roses or in this case stop and take time for a giggle. People don't make relationships with people like they used to, it all is a thing about trust maybe people are so afraid nowdays of getting mugged or worse that they just step into a bubble and ignore those around them as though they weren't there or exist. Laughter can be great medicine for people it has such high medicinal values, it can lift depression, keeps are blood pressure and heart healthier by lowering our blood pressure and also helps keep us young at heart and soul and all sorts of other things. I for one don't have enough laughter in my day. I guess it means I will get old before my time. But then maybe that is why I was more mature at 12 then some were at 30. hard life does that to kid.

I clearly need to work on this a lot more. I'm one of the most serious people you will ever know and have trouble finding humor in bad situations. I do smile at people while walking down the street and say good morning/evening, but when I'm really stressed out have trouble seeing any good in the situation. I'll certainly work harder, after reading your post.

Where I live it is a large small town. in other words we are not so small that everyone Knows everyone. But we are not as huge as a big city like New York.If I get eye contact with a stranger, I will either say hello or smile. But I don't go out of my way to say hello to everyone.

You make me remember the very famous quote" Smile and the whole world will smile at you" It is true winterose, life is too short not to enjoy it and make people we meet and people around us to be happy. We do not know that by giving our smiles with them, we are enlightening them in a way! I always smile to people I meet but I don't have lot of guts to say hello to strangers Not unless I am stuck in a line,or I am in the airport or a seminar, I always initiate conversation! Great feeling indeed!

I never talked to strangers when I was younger but now I start the conversation and I love it.
