Yes, I believe that it's an advantage to speak multiple languages. Where I'm from (Belgium) we have three languages in one tiny country. Dutch (that's my mother tongue), French and a little part of our country speaks German. Because I worked for the gouvernement I needed to speak at least French as a second language, so that's one language I speak and understand. The second one is English as you have noticed (otherwise it would be really difficult to be posting here, wouldn't it? ;-) ). I learned to understand it by watching English television with my mother when I was around 5. Speaking I learned at school. The last one I understand a bit is German. I had it at school and it's very close to the Dutch language, so you can really understand each other if you try a little. If I can find the time later (when the kids are a little older) I would like to learn Spanish or Italian, just as a hobby. Could come in handy if we'd go on holiday over there.
If you want to live in this global society nowadays, you really need to understand and speak certain languages, there's no way around it.

hello scrawl,
i think that there are a lot of advantages of learning a second language. here in india most of the people learn at least 2 or three languages. learning will enhance your ,other tongue and a comparative manner will develop that will also help you to understand other sister languages.
have a good day.

hello buddy,
indeed that is true... that there is great deal of linguistic variations in the asian languages, but ya you could try out one of the european languages.
and there is also another benefit of learning a second language. it is that if you start learning a second language later in your life ..... then you decrease your chances of getting alzehimers disease.
have a good day.

A lot of advantages! My first language is Russian and in my contry there's no wide tendency to learn second language. People learn language at school, but after finishing they forget it completely. But nowadays English becomes wide spread and many people try to learn it. I teach English at school and here I have a good practise of it. Besides I know French a little bit. I just love to learn foreign languages.

I would love to learn Russian as I think it is a fascinating language and culture. I undertand that a lot of French is still spoken in some places in Russia as it was the 'chic' language at the courts of the Tsars.
Is this true or just some nonsense I have read somewhere?
I have friends in Ukraine in a band called Fotomoto and they all sing in French.

Absolutely. If, like me, you are a native English speaker then it is very easy to become complacent and lazy. English is so widely spoken and understood that we really do not have to try. However, French and Spanish are useful languages to know World-wide and German I have found useful in Europe. I learnt French at school and have tried to improve it since - sometimes with interesting results!

I believe it would be great to learn spanish. There are a lot of spanish speaking people where we live and I'd love to be able to communicate with them. I did pick up a few words when I was working at McDonalds, but I've forgot almost all of them now. I'd like to take a class one of these days if I ever have the money.

The advantage of learning that second language is that we could use it for other people and to other country if ever we will had a chance to migrate or just for a tour. In our case as a Filipino the second language is English since that is universal language that we can use everywhere. There are times it is really confusing if you are talking in straight english as a second language but I still believe that practice makes you perfect.

Of course! Most people don't have English as their primary language, but almost everyone got it as a second.
My primary language is Norwegian, so I kind of speak Danish and Swedish too, I understand dutch and german, and I speak English. English is a great way to communicate across the countries.
