Anti-itch creams, all the ingredients are different, what really works?

I have recently gotten a bunch of bug bite from being outside working in my gardens, and I am allergic to the bites of many bugs so instead of little itchy bumps I get great big super itchy hives from the bites. I went yesterday to get some anti-itch cream and I had the hardest time ever trying to figure out what to buy. There were many different types of creams on the shelf and every one of them had a DIFFERENT active ingredient. How do I figure out what works best when every type is totally different? I didn;t know what to get so I got the only thing I recognized, which was Cortisone cream. It isn't working very well though and I was thinking about trying something else but I don't know what to get. Can anyone here who uses anti-itch creams for bug bites or any other reason please tell me what you use, how well it works, and what the active ingredient is in it. Thanks in advace for any information anyone can offer.

I use Benadryl cream. It seems to work better than the others. I am not sure what the active ingredient in it is. Bug bites are annoying. I hope that you got one that works for you.

I looked at that one, the active ingredient in it is actually the same active ingredient as in allery pills, which I thought was strange, so I didn't get that kind. Maybe I'll just crush up and allergy pill and put some water in it to make a paste and see if that works.

The ones I use on my kids are the benadryl generics, they work well. Taking benadryl the medicine can help too if you have a lot of bug bites. Hopefully now you don't have them anymore since i noticed this was an older discussion!

I am like you , I develop, big lumps that itch, itch itch, I have one now on my ankles, got it on the 4th while at the park. Try using calamine lotion, that usually works. Most people use it on children with chicken pox, to help the itching.
