What if, we are part of a social experiment?

*Disclaimer* This is not fact or rumor, just my own little imagination running wild for a few moments...
I was just pondering on the reasons for mylot. How did the people who formed it get the idea...and then it struck me. What if this was launched as a social experiment? Maybe by a university or a government group...or maybe just a bunch of psychologists sitting around wondering what would happen if they formed a worlwide social group. Could we get along? Would we lose some of our preconceptions and prejudices? Would we have compassion? Would we form bonds and relationships with people we will likely never meet in person?
Interesting concept I think. So...if we were all part of some experiment, what do you think would be learned by studying our interactions?

If this is what they have done then my lot is one of the experiments and i would have to say that it's good to a degree. You have to admit that there are alot of people here from all over the world. Then there are other sites that are something like my lots. Such as My Space, You tube, Facebook. Those are places where people from all over the world check out everyday and see things from other places.

Right, and any of those other sites could be an experiment also. I just think it would be really cool if 20 years from now researchers announced this big long social study they'd been doing and we learned that we'd unknowingly been part of it.

Lol, lots of things. People of different cultures can get along just nicely. And just with every other social happening there is always the one who has to throw a curveball and think his/her race/culture/whatever is disadvantaged/hated by others, lol. Debates can be passionate and heated. And people will make a fool of themselves, too.
Plus, through the anonymity people are willing to disclose more of their private lives and the lives of their friends and family than they would in a face-to-face setting. But that's true for other social sites, too.
What else? People will post any nonsense and try a multitude of tricks to increase their earnings. Just this morning I saw somebody make up several usernames and post the same discussions under various names. How quickly can mylot catch on, and will they, lol. I flagged one because I started to get annoyed.

You made another point without actually saying it...in the "outside world" people are more likely to ignore a problem because they don't want to be the 'snitch'. But here we feel like we really can stand up for what is right to keep this place nice for everyone.

Wow, that is really a great point of view you have there. IF MyLot were some sort of social experiment, I think that the researchers would be pleased that we all get along so well and have formed bonds without regard to race, creed, religious background or color. That is one of the reasons I love it here!

Thanks! I think the researchers would be pretty pleased to. It does seem kind of amazing that for the most part we've left our "stuff" at the door. I bet there are plenty of people here who normally wouldn't have been friends with ____ (fill in with just about any race, ethnicity, color, religion etc) yet here they are, maybe they know, maybe they don't know...but it doesn't matter because they have a bond.

oh foxy, don't make me paranoid! I think it's more along the lines of research for marketing. People are always asking you to fill in surveys as the information is useful to big companies and some sites offer you alot of money to do so, here we talk about things we like, things we worry about by starting the discussion ourselves and not thinking about why we're being asked stuff.
Until we end up stuck in a cube recognising people from this place and trying to work out how to get out I wouldn't think about it too much.
Unless they delete your post!

It wouldn't suprise me at all... I believe we've been sujected to some sort of experiment one way or another... You know those commercial that starts out with, "9 out of 10 people prefer......" Who were those original 10 people that they are talking about? lol... Wouldn't know what that "1" guy feels like? Like your disclaimer, by the way....

Yeah I would like to know...actually I'd want to know the actually words of all 10....you know 9 might of said "uh yeah it's ok I guess" and the 1 might have said "Ugh...this is horrible" Then 9 out of 10 doesn't really sound all that great afterall!.
It would surprise me either if we were all part of something...either here or some other place.

Well, they probably learned that people can create bonds without knowing someone. Most of the messages I post are usually when I need help or advice with something, or i just need to vent. The Mylot community has always been compassionate, helpful and caring. I've met alot of nice people on here and I've friended them. Of course, there are always bad apples, but luckily I've never personally had to deal with anyone like that.

If we are part of some social experiment, then we are the best parts.
I think they would be learning that people can be very simplistic, idealistic, and very, very complex. I think they would be learning that people can love and support unconditionally the friends they have never met. And I think they would be learning that people can be petty, and snarky, and grandly beautiful at the same time.
Basically, they would be learning that people are people ... good, not so good, indifferent, passionate ... all mixed up together. And that all these diverse people manage to get along quite well and have a lot of fun while we are are doing it.

I agree with everything you just said. That was really a beautiful response. "people can be petty, and snarky, and grandly beautiful at the same time" I think that was my favorite lin...just perfect!

I think that this place would be one that others should look at as we do often talk about important issues along with the chit chat that is also here.
It would be a good place for various agencies to loose their trial balloons and see how others would view their new or revamped or rehatched plans and ideas.
It is good that so many people from all over the world are able to meet here on a level playing field... without much pretense, without big power plays or the flashing of money and influence... We are people from all walks of life and that is wonderful... In this way we are better than the United Nations.
People could learn a lot from studying our interactions.

good day. Well, this environment provides very well with gathering informations. I mean maybe several mylotter's are members of the group that created this study. It also provide privacy for the participants well at least to some extent. I hope that they will use these informations very well.

We could get along swimingly if we all just remembered
to have respect for each other. we would learn so much about each
other and pehaps change some of our preconceptions and our biases
too.we would form friendships even though we might never
meet each other in person. we would learn not to prejudge
anyone by their looks.
