Very true!! You said it perfectly right! The Users here I believe join discussions on the basis of whether they feel like the topic is interesting and they know something about the topic that they could share. As for me, I give comments only on topics that catch my interest and those topics I find sensible and useful to talk about, unmindful of whether who started the discussion. Although I always see to it that topics posted by my friends here are given due attention, I only respond to them if I really have something useful to share. On those topics I really don't find interesting or beyond the reach of my intelligence, I don't really dare to comment because I believe that does not make sense. So, I do understand if my friends here do not also make comments on my posts always because I believe they have the same reason.

I also do not think that having more friends in my list would generate more responses for the discussions I start. But I believe that having friends in my list have somehow helped me generate enough responses for some of my discussions. It's sad though that most of those in my list are not as active anymore. I hope that they would make a comeback soon.

Yeah,exactly,friends cannot always provide responses to the discussions,it is depend on the content,however,this is something like traffic to your site.You could have more page impressions if you have huge number of friends,at least if they notified of your discussion and they have something in mind to respond about the topic,you have the chance of getting responses from them.So for me,it matters.

Actually I don't think it will have much effect on the number of reponses. On the other hand, having more friends will lead more people to read your discussions. However, I believe that it depends the topic of discussions, if it's interesting and everyone has something to share about it, number of responses will increase. For others, I'm not sure, but it works this way for me, I just respond or comment to anything I find interesting or if I could help. I might go to friends' discussions and end up leaving without posting because I'm not interested in that topic =)
