How do you celebrate your birthday?

I have a Vietnamese friend who has told me that in her country people didn't celebrate birthdays but instead all got older on the same day, their version of a New Year's Day.
I live in the United States and have my birthday during the later part of this month. My family, sisters and brothers and sister and brothers in law, will gather with me to celebrate my birthday with a dinner or another meal. Here it is customary for them to give me gifts... Yet I like to give them a little token of my love for them too.
How do you celebrate your birthday? Is it on your birthday or at another time? Do people give you gifts? Do you give other people gifts? Is there a religious or cultural aspect to your celebrations which might be interesting to the myLot's readers?
Thanks for participating in this.

Ah, you are going to have a big birthday. I am from China. We don't have a very big birthday meal or a big birthday party. When young, we have a good meal with our parents and sisters or brothers. When older while we are out to work, we often have a good meal with just several best friends and get calls from family members. We do have big birthday meals. But it's not for young people. It's for people who are maybe 50 or 60 years old.

It will be just a birthday with my family at a restaurant or perhaps at one of my brother's or sister's house... I am single and am the youngest member of the family so I have always had this kind of birthday party, a family meal. I will be turning 48.
I don't think that I have ever had a birthday party that has included family and friends... I will go out to lunch or dinner with friends and also go out at another time with my family.
Thanks for posting what you do.

The day after tommorrow is my birthday. It is also China's Dragon-Boat festival. There must be many interesting things. I will be happy to share that with you and all. Happy birthday to you and happy birthday to me both in advance. :)

It really depends. When I was in college, I invited all my friends in my place to celebrate my birthday with my family as well. When I started working, I brought some foods here in the office for my office mates... lolz but last year, my boyfriend and I went to just see a movie then we dine out... but this year, I have no idea of what I am gonna do... hehehe

Well, since I started a family with my hubby - our birthdays are pretty casual - celebration with the kids at home, cake, ice cream, dinner. My husband did plan a nice surprise birthday party for me when I turned 25 - it was at Bucca De Beppo and all our closest friends were there! It was a lot of fun! In the past we use to go out to dinner or something, but now with three little kids we just spend time all together! Usually I get a gift from my husband and my kids will have made me a card or something cute!

In Romania we celebrate the birthdays somewhat similar like you do there in the U.S. It is also customary here to receive gifts on your birthday. Sometimes i spend it with my family, sometimes with my friends. On my birthday i don't give others gifts - but receive them - oh yes, and also we celebrate birthdays on the actual day, not on Christmas, Easter or other sort like that.

I am glad that you have fun... Whether something is weird or geeky isn't for me to decide... as long as it brings you happiness and you aren't hurting anyone, I don't label it. Thanks for posting.
