Would you accept your country's politician be associated with former criminal?

I explain myself, here in Canada, a story broke out about a member of the Conservative party who had a girlfriend who was associated 10-15 years ago with not only the mafia, but also the Hells Angels. And the Minister actually brought secret documents to her house. Let's just say as soon as the news broke out, the guy had to resign from his job, but I'm asking, since it was so long ago that his girlfriend was in the criminal world, was it really needed for him to quit, or is it acceptable for a person with such an important job to have someone close to him that "used" to be associated with crime?
