I think it all depends on where you are going to and what you want to do. For me, I live in Asia but once a year I try to make it to Europe. As such, the best way for me to travel is via plane. It's faster. I simply don't have the time to travel weeks on end to my destination and weeks on end traveling back. It's much better to take the relative discomfort of air travel and have more time in the place you want to goto.
However, when traveling to near by countries, taking the train can be more fun. I remember when I lived in London, one of my good friends used to travel via train from Paris to see me. The train brought him right from one city centre to another in three hours. This was roughly the same time as flying from one air port to another and then traveling into the centre of the city.
I think train travel is also good fun if you want to see a country and all that it has to offer. I remember my stepdad taking my sister and I from Chicago to San Francisco via the train. It took three days and you could really see the way changing landscape of the country as you moved out West. You could also stroll around liesurely and meet new people.

I prefer the airplane, I really don't like the discomfort in trains and also the noise.
