Are you afraid of clowns?

When I was a little kid my parents took me to the circus, once. When those clowns crawled out of their little car and came towards me I about climbed the poles to the big top. Later in life I watched the movies "It" and "Funhouse", that didn't help my fear of the killer clown phobia. My kids are leery but they don't think too much about it. So how about you? Does Bozo give you nightmares?

i'm not afraid of clowns. i never got to watch those movies so they didn't make me scared. i don't remember if i went to the circus when i was younger or not. clowns just aren't something i'm afraid of. i can see how they would make people afraid though. they aren't the most normal looking people lol.

I think I liked their show too, I just went loopy when they came over to me. Maybe it was a fear of the unknown, who knows.

I've never been afraid of clowns. I'm remember when my mom said she was young she went to some type of store which I can't remember. It was around christmas time and santa claus was walking around. She was trying to run and hide.

I don't know. I thought it was funny when they hurt themselves during a show though, guess I just have a wild imagination.

No, I am not afraid of clown. I actually like them. I really enjoyed those 2 movies, "IT" and "Funhouse". My husband and I love all kinds of horror movies. Bozo has never appeared in my dreams. My children are a little akward around them as well so I'm not sure how they will think of clowns later on in life. Good post.

No I have always loved clowns. I saw scary movies and heard and read scary stories about them, but my perosnal experiences with them in person was much more positive than that. One thing you could do is put on a clown costume and clown make-up yourself and densensitize yourself to the fear by seeing it from the other side of the mask, so to speak. It is actually fun. You can have the kids do it too.

I am not afraid of clowns but I understand this is a common fear. I guess one person's funny man is another person's monster. I am more afraid of things like hurricanes and bugs in the house. But clowns, I can handle. Say it with me now, "The clown is my friend, the clown is my friend..." PearlGrace

Not that much, but they are very creepy looking. I don't know why parents think they are so appealing to kids, they are creepy. And what better cover for child molesters. They are just very creepy.

I know, John Wayne Gacy took care of that.

hi gitfiddleplayer, I am not afraid of clowns nor have I ever been, but my neice is petrified of them. In the town where I grew up, we had a parade every summer and tons of clowns are walking around the streets and my neice has a hard time controling herself when they try and approach her. She will run towards my mom's house or hide behind one of us adults and cover her face and start crying. She has such a hard time enjoying the parade with all the floats because she's too busy worrying about these clowns. I'm not sure what it is about clowns that bother people because I know this is a common fear for some. Maybe it's because clowns are funny looking and self consiously people expect something to happen that is unexpectable? Masks have the same effect on some people as well. Have a great day

I think you're right, it must be the mask, you can't tell what they are thinking because they either have a smile painted on or a frown. There in no mystery to them, but its all mystery to us.

Yes there was a pinata. But there were also a bunch of clowns running all over the place trying to make kids laugh and stuff.

I am not afraid of clowns at all. I really like the circus. I remember going to Barnum & Baily as a young child. On tv BOZO was one of the things I watched most often. Hobo Kelly was another one that I liked to watch. Although of course that's not really a clown. The best clown of all time - of course?!!!!! - would have to be Krusty from the Simpsons.

Krusty would be the cure for the evil clown. He has the best one liners.

Oddly enough I am terrified of them. Even the ones that are supposed to be funny in the circus which is why I have never been a big fan of the circus. It is hard to explain but there is just something about them that is freaky to me, its in their eyes, and even more so, like others have mentioned, if you already have a fear of some sort of clowns the do not watch the movie IT because for me that is what sealed the deal.

Me too... Did you ever see poltergiest? There was the scene when the young boy, the son, was in his room and there was a storm outside, and he had this clown looking puppet, it scared the hell out of me and i think that was what started my clown-phobia.

My boyfriend really hates clowns. He says he's so scared of them even until now that he's already 31 years of age. I understand him anyway. you'll never see the real side of the clowns because they are covered with those funny make ups to make them look happy all the time. I myself aren't that scared of clowns. it's just that i am not a clown fanatic as well. but i do like to watch their acts sometimes.

Nope, not afraid of clown. I have had clowns at my parties as a child. I always have had fun. I can see how some may be afraid of them. Especially after movies like those. But I do not have nightmares about clowns.

The fact is I haven't been to a Circus all my Life. But I have seen clowns.Though they don't frighten me I do find them amusing.Another thing I came to know when I was kid itself was that most of these clowns came from poverty stricken families and joined circuses to support them.Given this awareness I never was able to laugh at their antics.

Clowns definitely creep me out but I would not consider myself scared of them by any means. I think that they are weird but I do not have a phobia of clowns like some people that I have heard of.
