How many pushups can you do?

United States
June 5, 2008 12:19pm CST
I just dropped to the floor and grunted out 15 of them before my jelly arms gave way. I know that's not a lot and I'm not even sure what a good amount is. The Presidential Fitness Award doesn't go past Jr. High. How many can you do? No cheating now, give it a shot. I'm going to try and beat my current sorry record. I'm shooting for 50 by the end of the summer. Who's with me?

Our school had a fitness test thingy recently enough and one of the things was how many pushups you can do in a minute. I probably did about 49 in the first 45 seconds but by then my arms were so tired that I wasted the last 15 seconds just struggling to get the last 1. So my total is 50 in a minute. I like to think that I am reasonably fit. But 15 isn't bad. You really don't need to be able to do lots of pushups unless you try to use it as a way to impress women :P

I've got a wife so I'm done impressing women, just kidding ladies. You sound like you've got good upper body strenght, don't break the keyboard typing too hard. :)

Sure, like any man is ever done with trying to inpress women :P I don't have that much upper body strength and even if I did I wouldn't break my keyboard since I depress the keys with the muscles in my fingers, not my arms. Like I said, I'm just fitter than some (and not nearly as fit as others). It's just from doing karate really. It must be, that's the only sport I do.

I have recently started doing these! I can do 20 before I just fall on my face, but I have pretty good arm muscles anyway through pushing a pushchair for the last hundred years (or so it feels) plus carrying bags of shopping everday. I am trying to build up to do more, but whether I will or not is another matter!

Cool. My dad would do about 50 in front of us every other week, the alpha male must prove he is the alpha every now and then.

So your screen name is something to live up to huh? Cool, I'll reach 50 in a few months, but then you'll be at 200 a day. Oh man!

That is really good if you do daily and i think you can increase daily 5 to 10 not a problem so your body will become rock if you do daily. i do 10 daily my friend.

Pushups ... i'm rubbish. 10-15 and they're hardly proper ones. Never been able to do them right. Sit-ups on the other hand i can quite happily motor through for ages. As a slight sidestep I once used a rowing machine at school for about 1hr30 whilst chatting and didnt realise the time. The walk home was brilliant, felt like walking on water hehe

That really depends. Do girlie push ups count? Yon know the kind where you bend your knees? And, how close to the floor do I need to get? My son is 8 and he likes to do his push ups with his feet on the couch. I think that would make them a little more difficult to do, but he likes doing it that way.

300?!?!?

Girlie pushups count, you're using your upper body, let's set you at 300, sound good. The ones your son is doing are harder because he's fighting gravity at an angle. Sounds like you've got a fitness instructor right next to you.

I can do about 50 or so push ups before I get to tired to do any more and at my age I guess that is not to bad but i used to could do twice that so maybe i need to take the challenge with you as well. I would like to get into better shape myself.I wish you the best of luck and with the right mind set you will be able to reach your goal in time.

Hmm.. I can do 10 real ones. If I do girlie pushups (knees on the floor) I can probably do double that. Wow 50 pushups? Maybe I'll try for that, my biceps and triceps will definately be buff if I make that goal :-)... I guess I'll write back at the end of the summer to let you know if I made the goal!

hi gfp. i can do 50 full pushups on the fly. that's after not doing a couple for quite sometime already. you might want to vary your pushups to target specific areas in your arms, shoulders, and back. pushups are a very good way of being fit. good luck and i hope you meet your target. cheers!!!

Oh, my God, are you kidding me!!??? I actually got down on the floor and nearly injured myself (well, at least my self-esteem) by trying to do the girly-type pushups. My arms started shaking horribly by the 6th one. I made it to 10 but I don't think my form would have passed my 10th grade PE teacher's standards. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I hadn't been swimming my 100 pool lengths (not freestyle) 4 or 5 times a week, I wouldn't even have made it to 10 on the pushups. Hmm, I don't know if I'm with you on getting to 50 pushups by the end of summer, but I might try for 15! PearlGrace P.S. Hope your next discussion isn't about skydiving...

I think I can do about 20 or 25 in a row, are you talking regular pushups? If I do knee pushups I could probably do 50. I don't know about within one minute but I'm a gym junkie, I'm pretty buff. LOL!

You go for it...lol. I'm not even attempting it until I lose some more of my weight. I can do about 10, but it ain't pretty. I used to be in great shape and I mean great. I worked a very physical job and even worked out before I went in. I still couldn't do many...lol. I could 500 sit-ups every morning without missing a beat, but push-ups killed me. I have wide shoulders so I would always do an aerobic workout on my upper body and then really work my lower body to try to look proportionate. Now I am 50 pounds heavier after losing 30 pounds and not even close to being in workout shape yet. I am easing into it. I walk more, coach a soccer team and am going to start playing tennis regularly. Maybe by next year I will be able to do 50..lol. Good luck to you, though!
