What age is ok for kids to start wearing make up?

I know I have a long time to go with this one considering my daughter is only 2 years old. But I've noticed that little girls are wearing make up at younger ages. I remember playing dress up at my grandmothers house and putting on make up around age 5. But I was never allowed to leave the house with make up on at that age. I don't think I was really allowed to wear make up until I was around 14 or 15 and that was mainly concealer to cover up those wonderful pimples. But now with places like Libby Lu becoming popular I've noticed little girls who look like they are no older then 10 years old wearing make up. It kind of makes me sad to see little girls growing up too fast. At what age do you think is appropriate for girls to start wearing make up?

Hmmm who determines who is ugly and who is beautiful I don't think whom you say or call ugly wear makeup. I know alot of people that are not actors/stars that wear makeup and they are far from ugly. So I think you "facts" are just a little off. You could look at me and say damn girl you are ugly or someone else can look at me and say am cute and I can look at you and say the same. What one finds pretty or ugly another will not. You never wear makeup when you go out? To weddings or the club or anything like that? My mom would always say beauty is only skin deep but ugly is to the bone meaning those that judge othe peoples appearances are the ones that are the ugly people because they are ugly on the inside. What you deam as "ugly" can change their appearances but the real ugly people(inside ugly) will forever be.

I wasn't allowed to start wearing makeup until I turned 16 and that was the age I started letting my daughter wear it. I think that is plenty soon enough. I certainly think that 2 years old is entirely too young. Kids are growing up way too fast now days as it is without letting them start to wear makeup at an early age. That is just my opinion though. Thanks for listening!!

I made a mistake, you aren't letting your daughter wear makeup at 2 years old. Please forgive me for my mistake. But I do feel that 5 years old is still way too young for girls to start wearing makeup. Thanks again!!

I was supposed to wait until I was 16 until I allowed to wear make up but my friend and I used to wear it when we were 14 and then clean it off before I went home. Some people used to stare at us and we thought it was because we looked so glamorous little did I know we must have looked like a couple of clown as we used to cake it on!!

I think it depends on what you mean by "makeup". I think girls should be able to use lip gloss at 10 or so but full makeup I would say not until 14 or so. Maybe by the time they go to high school. I know that is so old fashioned, but I taught junior high for 30 years and raised 3 girls and I don't think they really learn how to apply it to make the most of the beauty they have until they are a little older. I know each of my girls thought that more was better, but caught on when they got a little older and don't use much now that they are grown. I don't think it is worn as much now as it was several years ago.

i think a clear gloss at like 11 is alright. but for the whole thing, foundation concealer liner etc. they should be a bit older 15/16. if i ever have kids on their 15th birthday i think im gonna take them to a sephora or a makeup counter, so they can pickout products and be shown how to use them. so theres none of that awkward hi this is my first day ever touching makeup face days. well if they want to wear makeup that is.

I agree, girls younger than 13-14 should not wear make up, and even at those ages should be a medical concealer for any acne they might have, and a light-coloured gloss, and if they will go to a party, then they can put some mascara, but not every day. Girls younger than 13 should not wear make up at all. Even girls of the age of 13-14 should think twice if their complexion doesn't need it, because make up cad destroy their young-looking skin, cause acne and wrinkles. Girls should enjoy their youth and innosence, they will have enough time later on to act like big women. I begun using make up when I was 14.

my daughter (15) was in middle school (grade 8) before she started wearing makeup and my 11 year has absolutely no interest in make up at all - i didnt even buy either one of them the play make up (i think that is where it starts), all i have bought them (pre makeup) is lip gloss.

I think for child avoid makeups to certain so that their face will not accustomed to makeups. Then one can use makeups from the age of 10 or 14 so that her face becomes some what thicken. So that makeup may not affect the face.

I think it's okay for them to play with make-up with they are at the age where they play dress-up. I did that with my daughter. I always told her that was just for playtime and not for wearing when we go out. I probably let it slide a few times. I think she started wanting to wear make-up on a regular basis when she started middle school. About age 12. I wasn't thrilled and I discouraged her, but I didn't completely ban it. She's pretty headstrong and I didn't think it was a battle worth fighting. She wasn't wearing a ton of make-up anyway. It was just some eyeliner and sometimes some eye shadow. I think once they become teenagers it's okay to experiment with make-up. I just don't like to see girls or women of any age too overly concerned to the point of being almost dependent on make-up.

i think that it depends on the maturity level of the child. i believe that i was around 13 or 14 when i started wearing makeup. it was mascara and lip gloss, the occassional loose powder if my face was broken out. i was solely responsible for purchasing my makeup, so i didn't want to waste it. i was allowed to wear more makeup for special occassions or picture day at school. i do agree with you that it seems like girls are becoming younger and younger that are allowed to wear makeup. dress up in the house or with friends is one thing, but i think that parents aren't giving the proper supervision with it. girls tend to want to wear makeup to be like mommy or big sister so that they can feel older. some people don't realize how many pedofiles are out there that prey on young girls that want to be older. they take advantage of the fact that these girls are insecure with themselves and they will take compliments as a sign of encouragement.

Good day.. really I don't know what age. it's scary to think that they're wearing it at a younger years. I remember during my teens and even at college most single ladies in my class didn't wore make-up, they just put on some face powder and light lipstick. For me when they become mature not in age but in the way they think but really I don't know. I'll let my wife decides on it.

I think natural is the best way to be or as close to natural . I don't think there is anything wrong with starting when you are a freshmen in high school . Maybe a light gloss lipstick, light shimmery eye shadow , and one of those mirror powder puffs . If there is a breakout then a cincealer is okay too. Avon sells mark products in their book now , and they are geared for young teens and adults . You can also go to the site . http://www.meetmark.com/PRSuite/home/home.jsp

My sister started letting her girls wear a lip gloss with a light tint at 12 and then when they turned 13 she allowed them to wear mascara and not clump it on. A couple years later they were allowed to wear a light eyeshadow. Like you when I was younger wasn't allowed to wear makeup either and I didn't die from not wearing it. Prople forget at that young age most have a natural coloring that is far more beautiful that what any make up can supply.

Hi cynddvs! I have been noticing that too in the young children here in our country nowadays too. I have seen shops selling makeups for kids that are hypo-allergenic and is compatible to sensitive young skin. My youngest niece who is 8 years old has been asking me to buy her makeup since she was 5 years old. The only makeup I have bought her is a lip gloss/shiner and eye makeup. Her father (my brother) allows her to play with it but not allows her to go out with makeup on. I guess, it is just normal for little girls to play with makeup but I don't like seeing them wearing it on the streets, in school or anywhere. I just wish children will grow up to be confident with their natural beauty. I just think that wearing makeup will just be appropriate on girls who are in their mid teens. Take Care and God Bless!

It depends what you mean by 'makeup'. My four year old has tons of little lip glosses, you know, the lipsmackers that smell and taste good and also some shimmery fruity ones from bath & bodyworks. I don't think I would mind even real lip gloss around 10, 11 or so but I don't see the need for anything else unless pimples or something hit early. My daughter does watch me put on my makeup, but I'm pretty minimalist, my goal is to enhance, not to look like I'm wearing makeup. I don't think she will even need any, she has big round dark eyes and long curly lashes! I have to curl mine and use eyeliner. I think Libby Lu is a cute place, my daughter and her best friend went there for her friend's 4th birthday and the girls made lotion, fairy sparkle dust, lip gloss, and body spray.

I think it is best to grew your child the way you were grew. Those girls that I know who depends on make up has to do it all their life. Because without it they are not beautiful. When you child is old enough and she want to do it then use your parenting skill and give the do's and don't's and then she will decide. I think it is too early to ask this question because maybe she will be the type who will never even want to wear lipstick. o.k.

I think 13 or 14 is a good age for girls to wear light colored makeup. Nothing drastic, though.

My daughter started to when she was about 12-13. It looked good on her and she didn't look real made up (if you know what I mean). My daughter just wanted to cover up her under eye circles and to look pretty. But if they want to wear make up to catch boys or to be popular then I think you need to talk to your daughter about that first.
