For the past 2 days I have tried to grill out and my husband had a charcoal grill before we got married so I thought well I'll use that up before refilling the propane tank. Ah, this hasn't gone so well. Is there a trick to this stupid thing? I put the charcoal things in and then used the lighter/starter stuff and it doesn't stay lit. I used half a bottle of the fluid stuff and didn't get any better results. Last night I cooked hamburgers for 45 minutes, I know that on a gas grill I would have had hockey pucks but not so with this thing. Can anyone please give me some tips? I don't want to waste the charcoal but if this doesn't get any easier, I am throwing it away. I never knew that this could be so hard. What really makes me crazy is we use to live in a house with no furnace it had 5 fireplaces so I built fires all the time! Thank you for any help you can give me!!

I'm not an expert on charcoal but how long have you had it? It could possibly be old or maybe moisture got to it. We have a gas grill so we haven't used charcoal for years but I don't remember it taking 45 minutes to cook a hamburger.

Is the charcol new and fresh? did I sit somewhere all winter and now you want to use it up? If the answer is yes, you got to get new and fresh. Over the winter it absorbed moisture and won't light. But don't throw it out if you get fresh and get that working you can still throw a few pcs. of the old stuff om there and eventully it'll work. That's all I can think of! Hope I hit the nail on the head! LOL! tdemex
