Do you find it hard puttin gyour child to bed when it is light outside? It never use to be when my son was young but now it is hard, he has just turned 5 and trying to explain that even though it is light outside it really is nighttime is difficult to say the least! He associates light with day and dark with night which is understandable really. I have now told him he goes to bed at 8pm and he has been shown this on the clock, he knows when its bed time now because of the TV progs and the clock. What a hard job, has anyone else had that problem?

mychattime_ oh, how I hated those time changes! They never make sense to me, how can I expect my child to understand? The memories are so vivid, after all these years, I can remember walking into my son's bedroom at 8pm and sighing when I saw how much light remained in the room.
I knew he was tired, so I put him in the seat on the back of my bike and pedaled around the block a few times. He must have fallen asleep instantly, because when I looked back, he was sound asleep and tipping to one side.
Thank goodness he stayed asleep while I took him from my bike to his bed!

Well i don't have a child but i do have a niece and she is very hard to get to go to bed. She got in a bad habit of sleeping with her mother for way too long and now she doesn't sleep in her own bed very easily.

Actually its her mom's fault she's as messed up as she is. My sisters parenting skills aren't well very good shall we say.

My mother got my brother and I to bed by reading to us ever single night. She would read us everything that she could get her hands on. Dr. Seuss, The Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson, you name it. My brother and I loved the stories that she read to us. She never had any trouble getting us to bed because we would fall asleep right after she read to us. I love stories to this day. I fall asleep after reading any book that I read. I go to sleep dreaming about the characters in my books.

Yeah I always do a story for my son but then he still stays awake, I don't read as much as I use to. Its a nice way to go to sleep.

my kids are still young. So for the time being they are still really easy to put to bed. My husband works evenings so I let the kids stay UP till 9...and watch tv until 10. We are remodeling their bedroom so they are in the lving room at the moment. But the television gets shut off at 10 no matter what anyways. My 3 year old is usually asleep about 9:30. My two year tends to put up a fight alittle more, but when she is tired she will put herself to sleep. So its all pretty easy on me. lol

my son sleeps at 12 midnight the earliest but can stay up til 4am! waaaaaaah!
he's a year and a half and he likes watching barney, csi and exercise videos like turbo jam and hiphop abs. he thinks its dancing. im a work-at-home mom and whenever these workout videos are on he would pull me from my computer and say, dan! (dance) and would get mad if i dont follow the video.
he doesnt like eating much during the day but would always ask for something to eat at night..tutti (cookie) or he would say YUM! while handing me the peanut butter or vienna sausage. He loves opening the fridge. sometimes i caught him going to the walkin closet and putting his toys inside and pulling our clothes out. sometimes i think its cute but when he does it everyday it gets to my nerves.

Oh my word, that would drive me nuts! My son can stay up late on fri and sat night if hes good. Before he went to pre school and school I would let him stay up until 10pm as he had nothing to get up for the next day so it didn't bother me. There is no way I could stay up until 4am! Thanks for the response.

I totally agree with your child day means light and night means dark. My eight year old and three year old go thru this every night because they want to stay up because they think they are going to miss out on something. But I found out that if i just reasure them that we have a big day tomorrow and need lots of sleep they tend not to fight and just agree and go to sleep.

Hello there, I don’t find it hard to put my girl to bed. If it is light outside, I still will put her in bed at 8:30 pm as usual and start reading the bedtime story until she gets tired and fall into sleep. If she finds hard to get into sleep, I will suggest her to get up and practise piano, which she dislikes. So she rather sleeps. Anther solution is I will make her do a bit of exercise (jogging, cycling or playing swing & slide etc in the park) the next afternoon to make her tired, then she will fast asleep that evening. Once she is used to the bedtime, it won’t hard for her to sleep.

I used to have no problem putting my daughter to bed at 8 pm but now that she is 5 and it is summer she will tell me "It's not dark yet" when I try to put her to bed. I just tell her it will be dark soon but most of the time I catch her playing instead of going to sleep.

Yes, children are quite hyperactive these days and they would go as late as up you would let them. Especially yes, when the light is still on. So I really have to put out the lights as my grandhildren... they are twins and 2 years old.. you know when it's bed time they will do everything to outsmart me... one would say he would go to pee... the other one would say... he likes to drink and so many excuses ha!ha!ha! but you know I have one good method to put them to sleep... I would start by telling them we would pray first and when they heard this they will always keep quiet and close their eyes to pray with me and immediately say Amen at the end of the prayer. Then... before they could move again... I will tell them I have a beautiful story that they should listen to and because they love stories... that would do the trick... as they listen to my story... they would become sleepy and soon I will see both of them already snoring softly. Ha! Ha! ha! Cute little boys of mine!

We used to have this problem, until we bought room darkening shades. That worked really well for us. Now that it's summer, we usually let the kids stay up as late as they want since they don't have to get up for school.

Yes they sound good, my son likes to watch a video or dvd before going to bed but usually chooses one that goes on forever like Toy Story or lately its 101 Dalmations!
