yeah, you may have encountered this line from a nofx song but it still bothers me up until now. punk rock has become so commercialized and kids today have the slightest idea what it truly means. they think that just because one is sporting a mohawk or listens to loud music, that its already punk rock. its far from just that...

Subcultures are transient. Deal with it. Punk rock was never about elitist, my no frills clothes are better than your no frills clothes. You think that because kids dress the same they don't have a legitimate claim on punk rock?? Throughout its history, it's always been about at least one member of the band having a mohawk. Instead of getting up in arms about the subculture becoming more mainstream, why don't we rejoice that some of the subversive ideals that are promoted are reaching a broader, more middle class audience? Keep in mind that while heaps of kids start listening to Good Charlotte or Fall Out Boy, at least some of them will be therefore turned on to each of these (stated) influences (whether legitimate or not). Since when was it very punk rock to whinge and moan about what the person next to you is doing?

Its also when synchronize jumping started, planned cute pirecings, tattoos with no meanings and punk rock summer camps. The individuality slowly diminished and its slowly catapulted by uniformity. Attitude become safer and accepted. Nowadays, parents who hated the punks, are now patrons of the style for their children. All because of what Avril, Sum 41, Good Charlotte did. Their contibution is a disgrace to the sub-culture. The angst and honesty is slowly vanishing, its all becoming cute and you see it in the malls as well...to be continued.
