Do your cats follow when you take your dog for a walk?

I think this is so cute. At the same time, because of this, I am not able to go close to the main road or take the dog to the main road, where the traffic is higher. I don't want my two sweethearts run over. The dog, being on a leash, is at least safe.
My cats are as excited about a walk as my dog is. They come running behind us (dog and I), sometimes meowing loudly. I usually take the dog for a vacant lot, where we can play some games, and even the cats join. It really tickles me. So, do your cats follow when you take your dog for a walk?

I did a discussion on this once before, and it looks like we're not alone in having our cats tag along!
Thankfully I don't have to worry about traffic and the cats will sometimes follow me for ages. The dog who isn't on a lead follows too, so I head off with two dogs, two cats and a small boy. The neighbour, who things walking dogs is just weird, regards me as if I have lost my mind!

I dont have a cat at my place now but we have one back in my hometown. The cat is with my mom and two dogs. I never had problems with Cats and Dogs together.
NOw, i am living with my dog. She grew up with a cat outside the house and I think she learned a couple of tricks from the cat. She likes to stretch like a cat and she likes to walk touching her body on my legs.

LOL sounds cute.. like my dog. She has learned all tricks from my cat, including jumping on walls and walking along it. She even tries to pull earth over the pee after peeing. LOL
Cheers and thanks for responding.

Hahahahaha! I can hardly believe how many of your discussions are 'right up my alley'!
I used to have 5 kitties and whenever I took the dog (who HATES cats by the way) out for his walk all 5 of my little feline friends would follow along too. The biggest one of the male cats wanted to be friends with Wolf so badly... he would trot along beside him as though they were best dog buddies on an important mission. One of the daintiest of the females would always get tired before we got back and would meow to have me carry her. So I would carry the little darling back, I didn't mind, and our little procession was so cute we often got people watching us with big smiles on their faces.

I have two cats and how I wish I could have more. But my Mom will hear none of it. :( I have to do a lot of convincing to get the two I have right now. She is very fond of them, but no, she won't have more cats in the house. I think a house overflowing with cats is so cute. I had to carry my cat the first time she came out with me--the first and the last time. She doesn't like to be carried. She let me carry her only because she was recovering from a leg wound and was feeling really tired.
Cheers and thanks for the response :)

My brother's house that I am living in is right on the highway that cuts through the mountains. My mother lives across the street. She is mad at my kitties because they go over to her house and kill birds.
One day I hope to have a big farm with lots of property and barns and sheds so that I can provide a great home for all the little animal friends I could ever desire!
Yeah, that is why my one little kitty always wanted me to carry her home... she had got caught in a steel trap a neighbor had put in his garden to catch a ground hog or something that was helping itself to dinner out of his garden. (Personally I like to plant a little extra so there is enough for wild animals to share in my bounty!) Anyway, my sweet little kitty almost lost her leg!
That neighbor and I do not get along at all over that. And he is a cop. I asked him what kind of a heartless person would want to inflict that kind of suffering on ANY animal?! He justified his actions with that it was just a wild 'critter'. I don't really hold it against him anymore, because people will be people, and sometimes they do some pretty stupid things, myself included, but I don't think he has ever gotten over that I had the effrontery to speak to him - an 'Officer of the Law' - in the disrespectful way that I did.

i have three cats, two of whom follow me when i go out; my oldest Salem waits outside the shop while im in there and then follows me back home. he's been doing it for years now. If im going for a long walk i have to open a tin of tuna for him and the others to distract him and the kitten from following me out. i have no idea why they do it, I can only assume its because they either want to know what im upto or love me so much they cant stand me leaving them. However the tuna is obviousley loved more!

ha ha you are right! When I go to market, my cats try to follow me. I can't let them do that because they might get run over on the road, and I would never be able to bear that. So, I give them a sardine each, and after that, they are not interested in following me.
Cheers! :)

some years ago we lived in the country and and had 2 cats and a dog. When ever we would take the dog or just go with out the dog the cats would go too. some times they would be behind and sometime they would flank us,or go in front. we didn't always have to have the dog tied up and the cats would take her hunting. The dog would bring back little rabbits. At other times it would be the cat leaving one on the front porch.

My daughter's cat follows and if I go next door to my parent's house we usually get two or three followers from there. I worry that they will get run over, but I am on a dirt road in the country and I guess there is no need to worry, they do stay off to the side mostly and if a car comes they do move.

I haven't owned a cat for a while or a dog, even. But when I used to own cats, they would always follow me at least part way when I walked. I never had a cat follow me for more than a few blocks, though. I don't think it's in a cat's nature to travel all that far all at once. Dogs like to travel along with their "pack" all the time, but cats like to take it in small pieces. So, the cats would follow a little bit, and then wait for me to come back.

The first time my cat followed us, she was too tired to return. I had to carry her back home on my shoulder. That was the first and last time she let me carry her on my shoulder. She felt so good and so soft, and I had never seen a meeker cat. Now, she doesn't get tired at all...
Cheers and happy mylotting!

My cats are always trailing along
beside or behind my feet, darting in and
out in front of me.
I worry about them getting run over.
But they are always fine.
The park is best for us, because there
are no cars.
They love the park.
It's so quiet and serene.
No loud cars to annoy.

Oh that's really sad. It is the very opposite here. My dog simply LOVES the cats. You should see the way she hugs and kisses both of them, and the way they lick her back. It is so touching.

The streets are a bit weird here so we don't really have "blocks" that we can walk around because the roads are all forks and cul de sacs . OK we could make a circuit but that would take over 5 miles. So we tend to do laps to the end of the street and back.
Our cat follows us around the circuit a couple of times and is then ready to go home. He'll stop near the drive way and each time we go past, he'll run up the drive way to get us to try to follow him to the house. After the first couple of times we don't respond correctly, he gets pretty noisy about it.

It's so funny. I have to share this with you. I used to go for walks with my ex-husband, just around the neighborhood. In just glancing around we would notice we had a string of our animals behind us. First our dog, Stryder, the short Blue healer, lumbering along behind. Then came our yellow tabby cat, Max. Quite a line up. And it always struck us funny.

I do not have a dog, but my cats will follow me where-ever I go anyway. They love to follow me. My cats are so cute and so funny, they are miserable when I am not around.

I have a 4 yr old who never goes out and an 18 year old who does.If I take the dog to the field behind the house, the old cat comes with us. I'm lucky in that I don't have to go near the road to get there. If it sees another dog, instead of running away, he runs under the dog!
He hasn't survived this long without learning a trick or two. The dogs he's shared his life with have been German Shepherds or ShepherdX Retrievers and he's always known they would protect him. If I'm going somewhere else the cat always walks us to the end of the block and then returns home.
What I love is after the walk! When they all settle for a nap together. To see a large dog being used as a pillow by 2 cats, one no bigger than her head, is not just cute, it's wonderful!
