Know any weird home remedies?

I'm doing some research, looking for home remedies that might sound a bit off the wall. For instance, it is widely reported that duct tape works to remove warts. Also, Vicks VapoRub is often used to treat toenail fungus and seems to work well for many people. One that I like is using Preparation H to help eliminate the puffiness under your eyes. I read just this week that some men are using that same Preparation H on their chest to make their pecs look good. Not sure how well that would work, but to each his own I guess. So, how about you? Have you used any of these products for something other than what they were made for? Do you know any other weird remedies for other health-related or beauty-related conditions? I want to know what weird home remedies you've used. Come on, 'fess up! Here's where you can tell all!

Well when I get pimples I dab on toothpaste and that dries them straight out better than any spot treatments I've tried!

Some people think it is pretty bizarre that I use vodka instead of antiperspirant, particularly in view of the fact that I am a tee-totaler and never drink the stuff. Well it works better. I never heard of doing that until after we retired, and I sure wish I had known earlier. What I have found works best, though, is a spray of hydrogen peroxide, followed by a spray of vinegar. That is best done in the shower, though, as it is important to wash the peroxide off or it might mess up some clothing.

Yes, you don't really have to wash the vinegar off, just the peroxide. Vodka is cool because it dries faster and they have nicely scented ones. Especially when we are traveling it is fun to just grab one of those tiny little bottles they sell in bins at the checkout wherever we are shopping--like the Smirnoff Raspberry. It is legal to carry it in a suitcase as long as it is still sealed. A fun way to freshen up and some of the bottles are cute enough to save and use to root cuttings or whatever.

Now, that one I certainly haven't heard. So, you can spray the peroxide and vinegar then actually wash it off and it still works? That is amazing and very interesting. I would be interested in trying that. Or the vodka. Wow, this is really fun learning all these new "treatments." Thanks so much for your input!

I have heard those remedies too, I do know the Vicks does work, it takes some time to work because toenails take a long time to grow. I have also heard about putting school glue around your nose, let it dry then peel it off. Thats is suppose to work as well as those expensive nose strips. I keep meaning to try it and just haven't done it yet. Also you can put a dab of white toothpaste on pimples, thats suppose to help dry them up. I have a few other handy things you can do with toothpaste. You can fill in tiny nail holes on the walls. You can also use it to hang pictures. You put a small dap on the back of the picture, put it up o the wall, when you take the picture away from the wall, you know where to put the nail.

Thanks, Polly. I like the school glue instead of the nasal strips. Picturing that makes me laugh! Yes, the toenail thing takes a long time even with the Rx medication because they take a long time to grow. I used grapefruit seed extract on mine one time and I worked very, very well. Thanks for your input, and for the toothpaste tips!

Ok here goes. If you are stung by stinging nettls you should find a dock leaf and rub it on. The strange thing is that nettles and dock almost always grow together. This realy works and takes away the sting. If you have a bruise, soak a cabbage leaf in boiling water for a few minutes and apply it (when cool) to the bruise. It has natural anti-inflammatories. For warts rub with a slice of freshly cut raw potato. If you have a cold sore, dab it with perfume, it will dry it up.

Those sound like good advice. I especially like using cabbage on a bruise. I'm going to have to keep that one in mind and keep some cabbage on hand. Thank you so much for your input!

WD40 is sort of like duct tape, it fixes just about everything, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it did work on arthritis! Thanks for passing that along!

Do you have sinus or toothache problem that is affecting your ears. Then you can use the Oliver Oil. You heat a small amount on a tea/tablespoon and when it is lukewarm you throw it in your ears. I have done it and it was successful.

Thank you for that! I actually know an ENT doc who recommends olive oil for softening earwax and we use that remedy at our house. Forgot all about it, so definitely thank you for the reminder and the additional information. That sounds very soothing, just reading about the lukewarm oil in the ears.
