Musicals

What do the people of myLot think of musicals? Do you like going out to watch a performance? Do you watch movies based on musicals (such as Sweeney Todd that came out recently)? Do you only go if you know someone that is in it? Do you listen to the soundtrack if you liked the music in it?
What are your favourite genres? What things do you love about them? What things can't you stand about them?
Those questions are just guidelines of course. If you have something else to say about musicals or a particular musical, go ahead. I'm listening.

I adore musicals. At this moment, I'm listening to the Sweeney Todd soundtrack..and will progress to the RENT soundtrack. haha.
I've only seen one show on Broadway, and it was one of the most AMAZING things I have ever experienced...I saw Phantom of the Opera. I haven't been able to watch the movie since then, and that was over a year ago. It was that different and Broadway is just that much better.
If I know someone in the musical, it's an extra incentive to watch it...one of the reasons I watched Sweeney Todd (love anything with Johnny Depp or Alan Rickman).
Personally, life would be more interesting if it were a musical. :-P

I got the Sweeney Todd soundtrack as well. I haven't seen Rent though...
One of the ones that I'm gradually hearing more and more songs from via videos on YouTube is Avenue Q. It seems really funny and I want to see the whole production except it isn't showing anywhere in the country that I am in. We don't have the strongest currency here so we can't travel half way across the world just for a musical.

One of the main reasons I love New York is because of Broadway. I've seen so many so far in my life. It seems like a trend now in Hollywood to bring them to the big screen. I'm not really happy about that. But on another note, I think more people will appreciate Broadway more for what it has to offer. I realy like rock operas. Rent and Spring Awakening are the epitome of this genre. I just hope that one day I can make a decent rock opera.

I want to check out Broadway at some point but America is just so far from South Africa. Unfortunately, we are a bit limited in the choice of what we get to see here. The really popular ones make it here but since it is only the popular ones, the variety is lost. Then when some musical becomes a movie, you have to find one of the one or two movie houses that are actually showing it.

I saw Sweeny Todd live, and if I hadn't seen the movie first, I think I would have been a bit confused! It was done differently! I loved the movie, and was surprised how many actors from the 'Harry Potter' movies were in it! ("Snape", "Wormtail", "Belatrix")
I am partial to the ones from high school....Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Grease.
I actually joined a community theater group because I missed those days! Of course, I only tryout for the murder mystery dinner theaters or non-singing stuff, lol! I like to WATCH the musicals, and really, to sing the songs, it's just that nobody would really want to LISTEN to me sing them, lol!

As long as you enjoy them, that is the point. I don't think you need to see lots of different ones but usually since you like them it will motivate you to go see lots of them.
I like the look of that site, lots of place to discuss the various musicals and stuff. Thanks.

I loved Cats. I think it was one of the first musicals I saw. The Phantom of the Opera movie didn't really appeal to me though and I haven't seen a stage version. Have you seen anything by Gilbert and Sullivan? Their most popular stuff would be The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and The HMS Pinafore. If you haven't check them out.
