Going abroad,on a plane, for the first time in 20 years!

I will be going on a plane! - Not one of these though, but an ordinary commercial plane. I am a little bit scared as I have not flown for 20 years!

Gosh I do not know whether I am excited or scared to death, a bit of both I think. We have always taken our holidays in the UK where we live. It is a beautiful country with beautiful places to go but after a bit of a rotten holiday this last time, we have decided that we were going to go abroad next year. We are also going to be going with my Mum and Dad which will be nice, the last time I went on holiday with them was 20 years ago when I was 15. We went to Florida. So anyway my Mum has phoned me today and she has found somewhere in Cypress so she is going to look at prices and if they are OK then we are going to book it!I am scared to death of getting on a plane but at the same time I am excited. I have flown before but not for 20 years so it is a big thing, plus I used to always have bad dreams about plane crashes so it has made me really nervous. So, anyway I have to start saving again now! When was the last time you went on a plane for a holiday, where did you go? Are you scared of flying or do you love it?

My brother is the same way Gemini - he HATES to fly, well he tells me he doesn't mind flying it is the thought of flying into something or stopping flying mid flight he hates! I say there is more chance of being knocked down while walking along minding your own business and I love to fly! The last time I flew was to my brothers! It was about 2 1/2 years ago and I flew to Gibralar as where he lives is about 15 mins walk from Gibraltar airport even though he is on the Spanish side of the border. I am sure you will have a great time in Cyprus! Let us know when you get something booked! xxxxx

Well if you were in spain or Southern Portugal it is probably just a drive away or Morocco you can get ferries to Gibraltar! xxx

You are probably right what you say about more chance of being knocked over. I have been to gibralter for a day when we went somewhere abroad, cannot remember where though!xx

ive flown once in my life.. and itll be the last. i get air sick from an inner ear thing, and the cabin pressure is murder. being strapped in with a few hundred strangers yacking yer guts up for a couple hours isnt my idea of a fun time. and dont suggest taking those meicines like dramamine.. they dont work when yer puking them up!! if i cant get there on the ground.. i dont go there

That is horrible, I am a bit worried about my ears they are a bit funny and I think that I might suffer with pressure. I shall have to take travel tabs too as I get sick in a car. Is it different on a plane though, I never got sick when I was last on a plane. Mind you I just slept the whole way!

Well first of all, congratulations on your proposed plans and trip..sounds great. I haven't flown in ages myself--yikes about thirty years...for me it's more due to finances. I was the only one in my family that DID fly..and I must have freaked my mother out with that. She was deathly afraid of flying...being that her family were here in NY, and my father's family (where I was born) were in Calif, my mother used to fly back and forth between coasts...well the last few times she did that she must have hit every air pocket going...this was in the late 1950s and commercial planes were still propeller jobs, not jets. So then our first trip down (around 1974) we went to Orlando Florida to go to DisneyWorld by Amtrak train...like I said she wasn't about to fly..it was a very long, draining 26 hour trip by train...hated it. When I found out it only took two hours to fly down, I said next time we have a vacation to DisneyWorld I'm flying...just out of the blue like that...she must have thought I was nuts to do that considering her severe phobia about flying...So sure enough, next time we vacationed there, yup, flew down...and I LOVED it! One of my secret ambitions is to still learn how to fly msyself!! would love that!

It is something to look forward too, and something of a challenge to save the money up for such a holiday. But I like a challenge.

Oh how exciting for you and at least you should be guaranteed good weather unlike when you were away last week eh! The last time I flew was November 2006 and that was to see my mum who lives in Spain, I can't believe it is that long since I have been over there but haven't been able to afford and I hate the heat which is why I go out of season too. Have a wonderful time and put all the chocci bar money into the savings pot too, no more Twisted bars for you at the moment LOL. I love to fly though and the longest flight was to LA a few years back, the worst was when myself and one of my daughters were on two different planes 15 mins apart I just wanted to land to be with her. Yes I hope the weather will be good! My Mum and Dad want to go and live in Spain, my Mum has has enough of UK at the minute! Yes I am going to carry on being frugal and begin saving straight away! We won't go until about august next year so we have got a good run of time for saving.

I can understand how you feel, I do get a bit scared worrying about plane crashes, especially when there is any slight turbulence in the air. However the main thing I feel on a plane is anxious as I feel clostraphobic a bit. My friends husband is like you he is terrified of planes, he had to go on one last year, he gets really drunk on the plane, lol, to calm his nerves. I don't suggest you get drunk, but I think a couple of drinks might relax you alot when you are on the plane. Not sure if you like natural medicine, but rescue remedy, is really good for making you feel less anxious, you just put a couple of drops in your mouth. It does help alot and makes you feel more calm. The last time I hopped on a plane was about 2 years ago now I flew from Mt Isa to the Gold Coast to visit my friends from when I was living in the country. Luckily it was only a two hour flight, but I felt pretty anxious then. I find talking to people on the plane helps. You will be fine, just try and think positive about it and don't stress about the flight. You could try my suggestions they do help. It will be awesome for you going away.

Well it won't be until next year but it gives me something to save up for anyway! If I am still on here by then I shall be a nervous wreck and will need lots of support to get me on that plane!

How fun for you to get to take a vacation with your family. We always go on a big trip every year together. It is getting harder and more expensive every year to get everyone together. It is so worth it though. We have to start months in advance to try and get a date together. As far as the plane thing goes, make sure you get acquainted with all the new security measures and what you can and cannot carry. That is the thing that has changed the most in airline travel I think in the last 20 years. Also make sure to take snacks since the airlines have been cutting their budgets and this is sometimes cut out. But overall, just try and relax and enjoy the flight. Statistically you are more likely to die in a car crash- if that puts you at ease any! Have a great trip!

You are right it is getting harder and more expensive that is why we are starting to save now! The trip is planned for August 09 so it gives us over a year to save.

I love to travel. The last trip we took as a family was to the Pacific Islands namely Rarotonga (Cook Islands) and that was just in June. Broke the bank but it was worth it as it was my sister in laws wedding. Lovely 7 days on a tropical island was wonderful.

Hi gemini_rose. I think it's very exciting that you will be going on a vacation abroad, and to Cypress! I love visiting new places and learning about other cultures. I try to research the trip on the internet so that I am informed about the place I am going to visit during the trip. The last time I flew was in Feb., I think. My husband and I went to Las Vegas. And in Oct./Nov. of last year, we went to Japan. Since I live in America, that was quite a flight! Although I get a little apprehensive when I fly, I love to go to new places. I have all these fun little things I do to make the trip enjoyable, which takes the edge off my apprehension. Firstly, I usually buy a People magazine to have in my bag to read during the flight. Next, I take a book by one of many authors whose books I enjoy. That way, I already know I'm probably gonna like the book. And I have a choice about what I'm going to read, based on how I feel (magazine or book). I love watching the movies on the flight. They help so much in passing the time. Plus, I usually purchase a new movie for my iPod and have that with me, in case they run out of movies on the flight or don't have one. I take some of my favorite sweet treats, which I never have at home, just to make it even a little more enjoyable. So, even though I have some apprehensions, I think I manage them pretty well and I consistently enjoy the trip. Bon voyage! PearlGrace P.S. I live in FL...

I have flown to many different European countries in the past but not recently. I don't think you need to be nervous, just keep up that feeling of excitement. I have not been to Cyprus but I have been to Crete and it was a great experience, as I think Cyprus will be for you. It's true you can spend every holiday in the UK and never run out of nice places to go, but it can be cheaper to go abroad. I hope you have no more bad dreams about plane crashes and you will enjoy the trip.

The bad dreams I always used to have in a house I used to live in. Once I moved from there they stopped funnily enough but over the years they stayed with me. I always thought that they might be a bad omen. I went to Cypress when I was 14, to Ayia Napa and I remember it being beautiful.

Its like riding a bike Rose!!you will be fine ...and what a great holiday to look forward to,and with Mum and Dad there it should be really good, they may offer to babysit for you,and you and hubby can go out for an evening together...they say that flying is statistically safer that driving....

I am just so scared, and you know it is only because of the dreams that I had years ago, well and watching crash investigation on discovery.

ohhh! Traveling is my hobbies.I love it.To travel, spending is a must. I did travel to singapore last two month. It's a good place to shopping. Sure, I am excited to walk around & do some site-seeing. The most important thing is to eat. Take a few KM to travel, and I can find a lot of nice local delight foods. Take a vacation to singapore. Well, it's an island just below my Country, Malaysia. Have a nice day !!

Oh, what fun you'll have. I haven't done the plane thing much lately. Or, the vacation thing, either, for that matter. But, a nice plane ride is always a good thing. Nothing to be scared of with planes. Statistically they're safer than cars. Just be sure to pack plenty of activities for yourself for the flight over. A good book or crossword puzzle always does the trick for me. Best of luck. Please be sure to share some fun pics when you return.

Hey gemini rose, Don't be too scared. I was like you. I did travel in about 3 or 4 years and was booked to go on a vacation in New York. I would be flying by myself as always and I thought I would freak out since I got unaccustomed to flying. Now on a side note...I love to fly, even after the 9-11 incident...going in a plane really doesn't scare me, I'm not sure what made me feel the way I did, but as soon as the plane took off...I was back in my comfort zone once again. To this day I have no idea what made me nervous in the first place. It was probably just the length of elapsed time since I last flew. Interestingly enough, a few days before I was scheduled to leave NY and come back home a small helicopter had smashed into an apartment building or something. One of the first things that came to my mind was "Gosh not another attacks after so many years!" When it was stated that it wasn't an attack I then though "gosh I hope they don't cancel my flight anyway." Only because i was anxious to go home. I did not enjoy my vacation at all and was counting each day to get on that plane back.

I regard flying as a necessary means to a greatly desired end. We fly across the Atlantic once or twice a year, depending on the year. We fly coach (economy) so that we'll have a bit more left for the actual holiday. Whether the flight is good or bad usually depends on (1) the airline and (2) how full it is. Despite the fact that we are Americans, I don't recommend international travel on American airlines. They are less comfortable with fewer amenities. In recent years, we've had our best luck with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
