One of my family members, seem to need everything perfect, If the house is a little messy she has a fit. I have noticed one good thing is she is not materialistic. She will throw things away, everything that does not have a place, she throws it away. No matter. I guess I am the opposite, I am a pack rat, I keep everything, It has a place, whether it is in a tote or a file cabinet or... It has a place. I have people come over and help throw things away when needed, I seem to want to keep everything. Which one are you a keeper or a thrower?

lynn_ The less things I have, the happier I am. The term used for people like me is a minimalist.
I read an article one day aimed towards people who were pack rats, but wanted to change their lifestyle.
Put everything you are not using into storage containers and place them in the garage, or attic, wherever you can store them.
If a period of six months passes and you never opened the boxes, then without looking inside, you get rid of the boxes however you choose. But you can't open them!

well, I think I made up my mine after a lot of thinking, I am just having a friend go to my storage and get my movies, or her and her family can have it, and I am just going to walk away,
That may seem strange, but, I feel if I really am suppose to keep it, or what ever, than it will all work out, I have been torn, and its been over a year, since I have seen my stuff, accept for what I have now. The stuff I have now is able to all fit in my car. ty

A bit of both. I keep sow worthless stuff and throw away the stuff that is important. .... Well, thats me. In one of my weird states and I like it that way. Anyhow, My mum's a thrower and she always tries to clean my room and throw my stuff away. Stuff like papers and old books. But I just get freaky and get them back in the house. I have to find a better place for my stuff, before she finds a way to get rid of them permanently.

What are we supposed to do, although I can figure out that we are supposed to put our stuff in it and keep it safe.. is that it.. ?? If yes, then i have tried this and my mum has bee successful to find that box and throw it out as well..

It is usually a plastic box, with a lid, some can be large to small, and if you have one, maybe, she will let you keep it if it is not paper. For paper for me makes me sneeze and I seem to collect dust with it, so plastic has helped, for all I have to do is wipe it down. Good luck

I used to be a pack rat. Oh, I'd keep everything from way back from the 1980's. But, when I took to my last move, I had to leave so much of my stuff and only take my things that I needed. After that, I've been what I've always wanted...clean freak.
My mother would buy things if they're cheap...if that's the case, more than likely she'll buy one or two. What's that for? Just incase someone she knows is in need of that particular item.

See, I have lost a lot of stuff, just gave it, walked away, many things, I just seem once I have it, like in this time, I am not sure if it is my age or what, I don't want to lose it. even though I am not using it, and the rats/ mice probly have had their fun in the storage. mmmm Makes me think, anyway, I understand totally ty

I come by it honestly, I'm a keeper lol...so is my dad and my mom. I moved 1600 miles in a sunfire, and what didn't fit, went to my mom's thank goodness they have 3 storage buildings at their place lol. I know that we joke about when me and my sister have to go through and sort out after our parents are gone, it's going to take at least a few weeks lol. Not to mention a couple of u-hauls, one to my house, her house and my daughters' lol I have gotten away from buying so much knick knack type stuff, and after a shipment of 5 boxes to me from my mom's and a trip back with a carload (a mustang this time lol) full I moved most of my stuff here. And it's amazing how between my stuff, and the comparatively small amount he had, it has grown to a 3 bedroom house, attic and basement lol oh yeah and a shed. Of course we've accumulated a lot of camping gear together, more furniture, etc. and it's just us two and our dog lol I could only imagine if his teenage daughter came to live with us lol.........move to a bigger house.

seriously, wow, well one thing for sure, is when you are able to hold on to things like that, you have a lot of heirlooms hand down and if you need something, you would probably have it somewhere. you are blessed that your mom was able to keep it.
Mine was too, until about 10 years ago, and then she moved and left everything, and that was that, now she is so far away, for me to get anything to her would almost be impossible. lol, i could see it now, you and teenagers you would need a house just for your stuff, and one for your family. ty

Well i think i'm more of a keeper myself. I tend to think things shouldn't be thrown unless they cant be recycled. But once something cant be reused, it should be thrown out. Lest it might encroach space to no use.

I am a keeper, a pack rat and cannot bear to throw
away somthing that I might want to use later.of
'course sometimes later never comes. I can throw
out if I really have to but usually hang on to cards
and photos and sentimental stuff like that. also I
have a hobby in genealogy and have a lot of correspondence
about my hobby which I save all of it, of course.

yes, I know genealogy is my thing also, I have it all on cd's over and over so if one breaks I have it backed up. I find I and cardboard and paper don't get along so it is either CD or DVD now a days for me. I feel I can keep things so I might need them or someone else. Which turns out this way a lot. ty

Im in the middle of this two. I keep everything that is needed or still useful but if i found that someone needs it more I lend it down to them. Like my old clothes if I no longer want to wear them I always gave them to my cousins or to somebody who will use it.

I do this also, but I guess, I never really changed to much for I still after 10 years wear the clothes I have. I do however, give clothes away if someone likes it, or I buy clothes for them, I am not sure why I do this.
But, I have stuff in storage for over a year now, and I have found accept for a couple of thing in it, 'movies' I could do with out all of them, strange. I guess even the 300 movies, now can be replaced. I just need to get up to Montana which is 500 miles from me and get it settled. ty

it all depends on what i think at that moment, can i use this later? or do i really need to keep this? it,s like i should and shouldn,t at the same time, i do for the most part try to do my share in recycling papers and such, but with clothes i tend to hold on to some, the ones when i had when i was a lot skinnier -lol. it,s kind of therapeutic to get rid of things you have had forever and haven,t looked at. i guess we all have our ways. have a great day!

I'm pretty bad. I keep piles of magazines I subscribe to, and anything anyone gives me. I can't possibly ever get rid of something which has been a gift from a family member. I can't get rid of my children's favourite toys either, even though they are all in their 20s now. I'm not messy, though - everything's organised and in its place - it's just going to make it pretty hard when we retire soon and want to move to another state! My husband, on the other hand, can throw away anything without a second thought.

I understand your dilemma, for my son's wife is that way, she has a problem with all my stuff, but she has been very tolerable about it, It is a silent agreement. I have organized everything almost lol
This is what happened to me also, my family needed me and I picked up and moved but, was thinking I would be able to get my stuff within a couple of months and then winter set in and wallah time went by to fast. and oops it is still there and I am still here. good luck in your move ty

I was that way when I was younger, My mom gave me an ultimatum, and it was I am going to have your stuff here until this day 'usually like the day or two before they moved, and then she says it here, if you pick it fine if not it goes to the trash. and she meant it. I am a little like this, but, usually I leave it out side and tell them I am gone, and they come and get it.
But, there was a time, they did not, they were so mad, but hey, I did all I could, and it was his,and if he wanted it, he should of made arrangements, Now, mom, she kept my stuff, unless she was moving, and her thing was I am leaving everything. and starting over, accept for this this or this. and then that is what she did, I can remember sine I was little, how much I lost, I guess that has helped me not be materialistic, because unless, I had it with me, it would be left or thrown away or given away. It works, but, its tough love. Good luck ty

I am definitely a keeper. I have been getting better about getting rid of the things that I really don't need around lately, cause I'm getting ready to move, but I mostly like to keep things. I am always afraid that if I get rid of something, then I will end up needing it later, and I'd hate to end up having to spend the money to get another one when I could've just already had it.

i tend to be more of a keeper. my grandmother was a pack rat. she kept everything. you couldn't even sit at her kitchen table because it was covered with butter containers and bread bags and all sorts of stuff like that that she kept. i am not that bad, but i do tend to keep some things longer than i should.
