Cookies usually stores information about you and your computer. Here's a good example. When you visit some of the online shopping sites, you have to login right? Your login information will then be stored on the cookie so that when you load your pages, the site will look for the cookie and logs you in automatically.
Some cookies are harmful though and in most cases very discreet (unless you manually review all the cookies). Some record personal information that may be confidential and the website that uses it can use it for malicious purposes. You can erase them. That's ok.
