recently I have been feeding my dog iams dog food. But the other day in the paper I read that dog foods like iams have cancer causing products put in them. So now I want to get my dog something healthy but doesn't have any hidden negatve aspects. I'm also kind oolf on a budget and can't afford those all natural super expensive dog foods.

I've always thought that Iams made a quality product so what you read makes no sense to me, unless the general article itself was against processed foods for pets. Some people feel strongly that all processed pet foods cause cancer but those same people are 100% committed to feeding their animals a natural diet so their views can be biased. I have been feeding my dogs Iams or Pedigree for years and have not lost one to cancer and don't know anyone else who did either.

Iams is not that great of a dog food. They changed their formula dramatically when Proctor and Gamble bought them in 1997.
They use low quality ingredients, and a lot of fillers. It's not the quality of the food that makes them so highly recommended by vets; it's a great marketing campaign.
There are much better quality food that are competitively priced with Iams, but they are harder to find and not as well know

I have been feeding my dog BENEFUL from PURINA and after plenty of research it is probably one of the best inexpensive brands it is vegetable based so it is healthy and there are no risk factors attached that I know of. I used to feed him Science Diet but considering our WONDERFUL economy right now I can't afford it anymore so it is nice to know I had another option and I TOOK IT!!

hello moose8,
that is the reason i give my dog some home prepared food. i give him all that i eat and in addition to that milk that goes off too well with it.
my dog is omnivorous like me and i have no problem giving hi m food as it eats all that i eat. but i give my dog more protein than i eat as i leave it un chained so that it is very active.
anyways have a good day.

You're right iams isn't any good, nor is pedigree or any other brand you can find at a supermarket. Good quality food can be found at pet stores but even there you have to do your research to find the best brands. Canidae, James Wellbeloved and Royal Canin are three of the good quality foods that also come with a reasonable price tag. Eagle Pack, Orijen, Taste of the Wild, Innova, Innova EVO are considered the best brands but they're pretty expensive.
Since cost seems to be an issue for you, you should know that since there's more nutritional value in the good quality food, a dog will have to eat less of that compared to low-quality food so a bag of high quality food will last longer than the low quality. So IMO it's well worth the extra money to buy good quality because in the longrun it's still cheaper.
