Can cats suffer grief or loss? Can they miss each other?

I think cats grieve or miss each other when they are seperated. Our female cat, EB, was once seperated from her partner, Big Man,before the kitten came along. He had gotten lost outside and we couldn't find him.
EB would roll on the floor for hours and shriek at the ceiling as if she were calling to him. I've never seen a cat do that before. Later, we found him and brought him back inside and she acted very happy to see him and kept jumping on him.
So, my question is this. Have you ever noticed how your cat reacts to death or loss? Do household pets grieve the way a human would? Do they show emotion, without crying. Maybe by getting depressed?
Please share.

Yes, defiantly, they grieve and stress much like any other bonding animal. I remember once on a long road trip (10.5 hours) from NE to TX, i had my cats each in their own kennel, and they whined none stop for the first hour until I allowed them to double-up in one kennel, and they were fine for the remainder of the trip. there's been other times that our other two cats get separated by a negligent closed door for hours and I'd find them camping on either side of the door waiting to be reunited, eh eh. :-)
on a side note to cat/human bonding. I had a cat that was very aware of my emotions, and if I was particularly depressed he would come to me quietly while I was in bed, curl up on the pillow next to my head and gently rest a warm paw on my cheek or temple and purr quietly...

Yes, animals are very much in tune to us.
They really care. And, I guess they care
about each other, too. It's amazing to think
what kind of intelligence must be living
in their heads. You know?

Certainly that they do feel sadness just like whey they just give birth and got separated you can tell how the mother can be overprotected with her kittens and I think that kind of emotion can bring so much anger or sadness.

ive seen it in more than just cats, but ANY animal. there are some even who when theyve lost their mates.. will deteriorate so badly from their depression they will literally die of a broken heart. animals, not just household pets, love just as fiercely as humans.. usually more so, and dont recover as easilly either.

you are right. one has heart and so called feelings and when one is separated from being with whom you are living you will feel lonely... the main problem is that they cant speak or talk to us..so they feel quite bored..its better to keep pet in pair of two.

In 2006, when I lost one cat in late January and another one in February, my Tabitha seemed to notice. She'd wait a minute or two before eating her breakfast in the morning, as if she were expecting to see them any minute. Then she became my only cat and hung around close to me for awhile. So it's possible that she did notice, although she didn't cry or anything like that.
I think that cats intuitively understand that something is wrong and have different ways of expressing their discomfort/grief.

Hi beautyqueen, Yes, cats can definitely suffer grief and loss. They seem to know too, if you are grieving. Back in April I had to get my cat put down that I had for 13 years and was really a member of the family, he was suffering terrible. We had another cat here that we been sitting for a friend, and ended up keeping. She knew that I was grieving and would come and get up in my arms and this was a very rare thing for her to do, but common for the cat that was now gone. It seems she was saying, "I understand". I guess we really know very little about life, animal or human. Blessings.

Yes I really think cats miss each other. When one of my kittens got hurt and had to stay two nights at the vet her sister looked all over the house for her crying then she would come get on somoneones lap and love them and then look at them as if to say go find my sister please. I have even heard of animals dying of heartbreak when one passes away.

I think cats like dogs do suffer depression and grief when their partners leave. My cat always wails when he thinks I've left somwhere with the dog and have left him alone.
Oftentimes he will find me and be very happy might even purr.

I am sure they do. They have emotions and feelings just like any other animal does. So i am sure they feel and grieve and miss others when one passes away.

I think all animals suffer. It even doesn't matter if it's domesticated or not.

Definitely they do. Our cats miss each other even if we bring one to the vet without the other one so we try to bring them together. If we take any animal out of the house the other animals notice.
