Washing The Dishes

I was washing my dishes this afternoon and got to thinking..... I am very specific about how I do them and I always fill the sink in the same way every time! (Unfortunately I don't have a dish washer) I always put all of the cutlery and cooking utensils on the left hand side of the sink and then the plates in the upper right hand corner and then I put any little containers or bowls around the plates and on top of the cutlery! I leave bowls and pots and pans for the end and I do the sharp knives separately so that I don't cut myself as I am accident prone as it is!!! LOL So, are you like me, do you have a certain way of doing it the same each time or do you just add the water to them the way they are thrown in there? I have to take everything out and rearrange it before adding the water! ~Happy Washing~ ~Heavens~

LOL! I wish I could talk my hubby into that but no chance...they don't get done until I do them...He would just use up all of the glasses and mugs, plates etc and still not do the dishes! ~Heavens~

I have a dishwasher but growing up we did not. So My mom and dad taught us how to wash dishes by hand, and they taught us the same way as you are discussing, first we would rinse all the dishes and put them in some sort of order on the counter on one side of the sink, Then we would fill up the sink with soap and water, we had two sided sink so one side would be where we filled up with soap, we would wash the plates, then the cups, then the silverware was always last. We would put all the plates in the soapy water, wash them, put them on the other side of sink, then when we had a pile of plates we would rinse them and stick them in the rack to dry, then we would put all the cups in, etc. We just let them sit in the rack to be dried and not dry by hand, unless the rack would get too full then we would have to dry some that did not fit in the rack. We also had to do pots and pans, those were done after the silverware so that they would make our soapy water brown/black once finished. It was not fun but it is good to teach how to do, because anytime we have a breakdown I will have to teach my kids how to do it too.

So true sanelle it sure isn't fun but good to know how to do and my parents still do it all by hand and so do I but mine is out of lack of money for a dishwasher....I so wish I had one as it is hard for me to keep up to the task at times! ~Heavens~

I don't have a dishwasher. Firstly it was because it consumes more water and more electricity and secondly it does not clean the plates, cups, etc entirely. I got a dishwasher before and to me it was not good at all not just because of above reasons but it was damaged and water leaks to I just scrapped it. I'd rather use own hands for washing dishes as one of my main duties are to clean dishes while my wife prepares the food and cook them. That's teamwork. Cheers.

So glad you do that for your wife! I wish my husband would do this! I have to do everything here and I work outside the home and we have a special needs son! ~Heavens~

what i do is i rinse them all first ..and separate each of its kind...and when ready i usually wash with soap of course the glass first then rinse thoroughly and set aside then follows the spoons and forks same procedure with the glass but have to put some boiling water on it before wiping and putting in the drawer..then the dishes same as the glass and the last one are the pots used for cooking..and clean the sink after all the washing...

Thank goodness I finally found another "hand" dishwasher...I don't have a dishwasher either....nope, I'm kind of haphazard the way I was my dishes..I just pile them in the sink and wash them as I go along and in no real set order. In fact, I'll confess here...I haven't even done the breakfast dishes yet...LOL...figured heck will leave them to clean after my dinner then can get them all done at the same time--of course there's never that many dishes to do since it's just me living alone..oh, and of course my two kitty's dishes.

Hey Pye! I'm sure you're not as bad as I am...I don't even get to mine every day and with my boy and my hubby there tends to be a lot of dishes but because I work outside the home they pile up if I don't get to them! So when I do it takes me quite sometime as I have to find my way through the mess to organize them before I wash them and end up doing several sink fulls! ~Heavens~

Wow! I thought that I was the only one who organized the little daily tasks. I don't have a dishwasher either and all my friends think I'm weird! But our house didn't have one when we moved in and I want to spend our family money on better stuff, not just a dishwasher. I do pots and such at the end as you mentioned. That allows them more time to soak and degrease. I don't like everything piled in on itself. I can't make heads or tails of anything! I do some small plates and saucers first. That gives me a boost when I see my tiny neatly stacked pile of dishes to the side on the counter waiting to be dried. I get done easily after that.

I am very specific too honey - I always say Niall are the dishes done yet? lol That is one of nialls chores and Niamh is desperate to start learning - I was supposed to help teach her this weekend but I forgot! lol I always used to be very precise though , stacked plates and bowls at top side of sink, cutlery beside that and all cookware on the hob! I always washed glasses followed by cutlery and crockery and cookware last - amazing i still remember that though! Hugs xxx

I don't have a dishwasher either. I have some specific routine when I am doing dishwashing. I have only one sink and I start washing with water, the cups first and then the knives, spoon and fork and place them inside the cups. I follow it up with the plates, bowls and pots. I usually put the dirty dishes on the right and those that I wash with water on the left side. After washing with water I star soaping the cups, spoons, etc in that order putting the finish dish on the right side. Once I am done soaping and scrubing the dishes I start washing them with water one at time and put them on the left side of the sink. The dishes are then place inside a container where they are left to dry and ready for used. Happy Washing everybody!

In my family, I usually wash the dishes, because I can't cook. When I'm a yong girl, I hate washing the dishes, so I add the water to them and don't wash them quickly. If my parents don't care about it, I usually escape. and when I went back, the dishes had washed. It's very interesing. Now I study here which is very far from my home and my patents. I usually buy the food and it doesn't need wash. so I miss the time which is need wash. If I'll go back home, I must be very glad to wash the dishes. In the future, I must hate washing, because I'll be a wife, and wash everyday. It's boring.

I have a dishwasher, but lately I have been washing just as many by hand as I do in the dishwasher. I do not really have a certain way of doing mine. I try to put them in neatly, but not really in any particular spot.

We have a dish washer. So that gets filled first. After of course rinsing them completely. When the dishes get out of hand, or there aren't that many I do wash them in the sink. I cannot say I have a system, or an order. They get washed, then placed in the strainer top air dry.

I wash my dishes in the sink even though i have a dish washer, I also have a specific order of doing the dishes I put all of the eating utensiles on the left side and all of the plates on the right i also leave the pots and pans out for last, i always add the water first though and the sharp knives dont really cut me any more although i managed to cut myself with a spoon before and dont ask me how i managed to do it.

Thank you for posting this, now I don't feel so alone. I don't have a dishwasher either, so whenever I do wash the dishes, I'm pretty OCD-ish in the order. First, before washing the dishes, I put all the dishes (except for the silverware) on the counter. Then I start with the silverware, then cups, then bowls, then dishes, then pot & other (let me tell you, pot & others STINK!!!!) If anyone tells me to do my method any other way, I get really pissy towards them (i apologize afterwards though! XP) Again, thanks for posting this, it makes me feel less freakish, Inunekoyesha p.s. i hope that i never have wash dishes in my life again! XP

I've been washing dishes since I was a little kid. Guess that's what you get for being asian. hehe anyways, my mom never told me any particular method of washing dishes. But I did notice that I will wash do the plates first, glasses next then utensils. Always in that order. Never really noticed that till I saw this question. It doesn't matter if there was just one plate and thirty utensils, the plates get washed first.

hmmm. dishes, dishes, the question here aint how you do dishes, but in our house, the big question is always, who gets to do the dishes? hehe. eating has always been fun, feel good but the sorting out and cleaning up of dishes is always a voodoo, between me and my sister, it has always been a raging war whenever it comes to dishes, haha. lols, we have to admit, washing the dishes not to mention doing chores aint fun specially when its suppose to be your rest day. hehe. but of course, when all the war has ended between me and my sis, the elder sister (which is me) presides the holy work of doing the dishes, haha, busted!! hehe. apologies to dear mother. hehe. anyway, doing my dishes, glasses and cups first, then spoon and fork, plates and lastly all those dark caserole, smudge with momies, special sauce and herbs, hehe. while all this is a pain for me, theres one thing i love about dishes, the last part! hehe. the part where i get to clean up the sink! yeah! just love wiping off all those waters and bubble remains. hehe (sort of crime scene, clean up!) and when everything is already sparkling clean, that's just about the tym id say all is done, and im off to prepare for another household war!! hehe.
