From my experience I owned both a rottweiler and a chine sharpei. Both excellent dogs and great dispositions, however the sharpei was more costly than the rottweiler. The sharpei had to have surgery on her eyes for the sagging (wrinkled skin). But she was the best dog I ever had. The more wrinkles the more upkeep there is.

You should research the breeds and find out what each requires and then narrow it down from there. Some breeds require more attention than others. You don't want a rottweiler if you live in a small place. You don't want a dog who is real active if you aren't going to be home to walk him a lot and play with him a lot. Some need more grooming, while others only need a good brushing. Some breeds are more aggressive toward other people and animals than others, but are great for a single owner. I have small dogs because I live in a small place have a Peke who needs extra grooming, but is less active than my Pommie who needs to run a lot. Consider your needs and find breeds that suit your lifestyle and then pick an individual dog. You and your new dog will be much happier.

It is good to consider what kind of dogs are suited for where you live. Also, do not listen to stereotypes about dogs, such as "Rottweilers are mean, guard dogs." It is all about the environment that the dog is raised in. Also, what kind of activities would you like to do with the dog? Do you want a dog that will go on long walks with you, or a dog that would be suited well for the family?
