Omg! I hate ants! This morning I noticed that I have ants in my house. Now, I realize 'tis the season and all that, but I would expect them in my kitchen where I always find them in the Spring. But, no, I have ants in the bathroom! How on earth do I get rid of ants in the bathroom and why are they there!?!? I don't get it, what kind of ants hang out in the bathroom? Any suggestions?

Here's a recipe that works really great:
What you need -
1. Borax powder
2. peanut butter
3. water
Take 1\4 teaspoon of borax powder, 1\4 teaspoon of peanut butter and 2 ounces of water. Mix together and use soda cap bottles (710 ml bottles, the plastic ones) and pour a little bit in each cap. Stick the caps along base boards where pets and children can't get at (don't worry, borax is not toxic to humans but may be to pets) and near places where you see them coming in. From what I understand ants absolutely love peanut butter and will even take the mixture to the colony to share it with them. This should help get rid of the initial infestation then use vinegar or apple cider vinegar to "wipe" away their path or trail markings to confuse them (they scent their paths to food and water sources with pheromones to tell the rest of the colony where they are). Wipe the scent trails away at window ledges, door base and base boards.

We had ants in the shower a couple of months ago. It was those offal fire ants. I got rid of them with baking soda. I put it in the clear fosset handle and down through where the shower head come into the shower. They were gone the next day. Just yesterday the sugar ants decided to visit the kitchen. I don't know yet what i;m going to do about them but have come across some ideas."Sweet and Low" on the hills of fire ants, The commercial spot remover spray was another suggestion that I'm going to try.

My daughter in Michigan used it on ants on her deck. She didn't say what kind. I had some baking soda on the counter but my granddaughter came in after i went to bed and wiped it off. So I haeve to put some back again today to see if it will work since I still see some.

Baking soda? Never heard that! Does it only work on fire ants or all ants? I'm up for anything! Ants are my biggest pet peeve. Honestly, I'd rather have mice, they're easier to get rid of! Thanks.

I don't know if this works, but I read recently one way to get rid of them was to put down cornmeal..they'll eat it but can't digest it..or maybe you tried this already and they just want to dump that corn!

Aaaah! I know how you feel. I have them too!
I don't want to use chemicals in my home, so I have tried everything I heard people talk about...cinnamon, cucumber peels, and other things.
I don't really want to KILL them, I just want them to stay outside. I have peonies growing out there and ants have the job of helping them to bloom.
The only thing I find that cuts down on them is to NEVER have ANY dirty dishes in the sink or ANYTHING in the garbage can under the sink. That's what they're after....sweet stuff.
You may have a different type in your home, but I have the big black ones who are after the sweets.
If I keep the sink totally clean and don't put any food in the garbage, I don't see any ants.
That's a hard thing to do, but I try whenever it's possible.

Yeah, that's true, it is hard not to put food in the garbage. I always scrape the dinner plates into the garbage. I suppose I could give it to my dog, but I don't like for her to have some things. I don't know exactly what kind I have because, like I said, they're in the bathroom. I know there isn't any food in there, but I don't know what could be attracting them! The funny thing is, I use bleach to clean the bathroom and kitchen... I know, harsh, but I want it CLEAN! I would think the bleach would be a deterrant! Thanks for the input!

You might have dragged in something sweet. They also may be attracted to whatever is in the lotions, shampoo, or such, something like honey or anything else that's sweet and they think is eadible. There are ants who are attracted to wallpaper glue. You just never know what attracts them, but you will have to look for what it is.
How to get rid of them? We spray around the outside of the house with some Ortho stuff for ants. While doing that you can usually see where they come in. And spray back to the nest. You also have to see what they congregate towards in your bathroom and remove the offending item.
You may even have a worse problem, if they made their nest inside your wall somewhere. We had them come in during heavy rain once. Then you need bait they take back to their nest. You need to kill the queen. I even found them in the mailbox twice after heavy rain. There I just sprayed them with Windex and removed them, lol.
Anyhow, you will have to be extremely clean for a while just to throw them off course. They leave a scented trail for anybody to follow to the new food source. You will have to remove that as best as you can and any new one that may be dragged in by a stray ant...
Good luck! I hate when they come in. It makes my skin crawl...

I agree! You know, I don't use flowery scents or anything, but I never thought about it, my shower gel is cinnamon and sandalwood, maybe that's sweet enough to draw them? Who knows? Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!

Get a water bottle and fill it with soapy water. Spray the ants they will die instantly.

I am sure that I have heard this somewhere before - I believe it works very well - you just have to make sure that you keep at it, go and spray them a few times a day and they will either die or turn away. I hope all your ants disappear and stop bugging you (no pun intended!).

We use Raid for emergencies, but it wears off fast. What a "bugman" told me to do before was to take Boric Acid (it's a powder) and put it in the walls. Remove the covers on your electric outlets and put it in the walls that way. You need to be careful with it (especially if you have little kids and pets) but it took care of our ant problem. We didn't need to do anything again that season.
We have ants in the bedrooms this year. My son woke up covered in ants. He is only 2 and is Autistic and still uses a bottle. He didn't get bit, thank goodness for footie jammies, but they were all over his bed, toys and everything.
They are horrible this year. We were told that because of global warming, or whatever, the seasons have been off. It hasn't been getting cold enough during the winters to freeze the ground and kill some of them off like used to happen. Every year is worse due to the mild winters.

Yeah, I was pretty freaked out. We stripped his bed and put down Raid and I called our complex to send out the bug man. He no showed for 2 days and then we had to go thru the weekend. By Monday I was furious. I called and they were just finishing up a contract with a new company and they'd be out that day. Apparently the other company just flaked on their contract. We slept downstairs on the sofa until the bug lady came and sprayed. Haven't seen any since, KNOCK ON WOOD! lol

Oh wow, I think I would have freaked out if I found ants all over one of my kids! I feel for you! I have kind of noticed that the bugs are a little worse this spring. Thanks for the suggestion!

I thought about insecticide, but I have 3 kids and a small dog, I'm afraid it might make them sick. I do use bleach when I clean, though. You'd think that would keep them away!

I was watching a show one time and there was a pest person on there he said if you mix half boric acid and half apple jam and mix it up and put it in the places that they are coming in at it will kill them and they go away.
Now I did this trick and I had to use grape jelly because it was all I had and it worked, I put it in all the places in my house that I had seen them (they where big carpenter ants) and in about a week or so I stopped seeing them. Now if I can find a way to get rid of those big ugly hairy black spiders....

I think it depends upon the ant type. Here in Texas we have those nasty Fire ants which I despise. Whenever I see one of their mounds I go out and pour a package of Instant Grits on it, kills the whole colony in a couple of days. In the house I usually use plain old white corn meal if I can find where they are coming in at.

Black pepper or powdered cinnamon is the most natural and effective way. Just sprinkle it wherever you see them. Also try a more lethal way: borax and sugar I don't suggest it if you have pets or small children. Otherwise spraying vinegar on them does the trick as well. Hope this helps.

A friend of mine had a problem in his garden with bugs and he came up with a solution. There are plants out there with natural repelents, hi ph acidic levels that pesky critters don't like.
He basically took jalapeno pepper(3), a clove of garlic,a large onion and water.
Mince all the ingredients together and mix everything up adding water just to soak. The idea is to infuse the water and allow the natural juices to mix and mingle. Cover and let sit overnite.
Pour the liquid through a sieve into a spray bottle or container. Gently squeeze the remaining indredients through the sieve to remove all the liquids, into the water bottle/container. This is your repenellent.
This simple infusion does not harm most plants and bugs hate it. I used it and saw the ants literally throw themselves off the back deck.
Good luck!

Get a spray bottle fill it w/ water, then put lemon scented joy in the bottle until your water turns yellow (like mountain dew) and spray on ants and around your bathroom after a few days you will not get anymore ants.

You can use boric acid to kill them.
I have this problem also around my bathtub. It starts in the spring with the little ones and then I get the big black ones in my kitchen.
We bought a spray that lasts three months, so hubby has to do this at night while the dogs are sleeping so it dries overnight.
I use to have a book that told how to get rid of different things and I can't find it right now!
But I do think I remember what her did was to take a small cup and a small stick and place a little piece of banana on it in the center and then put a light coating of cooking oil on the stick and then they will fall into the water that is in the cup.
I hope that I am remembering that right.
Good luck.

I had this problem last week. ICK! I know how you feel. My hubby bought some of those RAID ant traps. They seemed to work well. My mom said to sprinkle cayenne pepper around the outside of the house. I guess it was an old Folklore remedy. We have a contract with TERMINIX. I called them and they sprayed. We had to wait a few days. That is why mu hubby bought the traps. We have had alot of rain recently. That can drive them in. Good luck with it.

Aaahhh, I never thought of that! We've had a lot of rain here, too. I avoid using exterminators, though because they're too expensive. Cayenne pepper is an interesting thought though. Thanks.

well it seems the ants have really 'pested' you. the most effective thing would be, as i know, is to use lysol. that is effective against most species of ants. even wardens in south africa use them against the killer ants there. and that too effectively.
but also see the brighter side. ants scavenge very well. other pests would be abound in absence of ants.

One of my old neighbors used to have that problem. She used strong bleach to get rid of them-she would wash the bathroom floor in bleach and then spray antkiller along the baseboards. It worked for her.

I also have ants. Kitchen and bath. Or anywhere else. When i feed my cats wet food i have to put it on the table. If its anywhere in the apt on floor the ants are there in less than 30 min. Kitchen counter is bad too. I have heard that is you put salt or was it red pepper keeps away the ants or was is spiders? Never tried it. Easier just to feed the cats on the table. what the h---, they go there anyway.

LOL! That's funny, my dog gets on the table too! I catch her there a lot after the kids have made something to eat and didn't put the stuff away. Good point, though! Maybe I'll have to start feeding the dog on the table. Thanks!

Hmmmm ,there are so many wonderful ideas to solve the problem ...
And i give you another one more suggestion and hope it is useful.
I think you can find out where are these ants come from ,if they are from some where out your room ,now ,you can put a piece of cushion with glue or sth like it on the ground under the window or door .Of course ,you can also mix some sweet liquid with it ...
Hope it could work .Best wishes for you ...
