When is a child old enough to bathe him/herself?

I realize part of this answer could be when the child is really able to cleanse him or herself effectively, but I was just wondering if there is a certain age that most parents let kids start bathing themselves?

Thanks! I have a 4 1/2 year old who is starting Kindergarten this Fall. She and my 3 year old still bathe together (not by themselves), but I've noticed my older one does a pretty good job and is maturing much more than the other. I didn't know the round about age - but this helps! Thank you so much!

When my little girl was about 7, I started to let her bathe herself. I would let her soap up and then have her call me when she finished so I could make sure she did a proper job.

I think specific age cannot be predicted....when the child become adolescent,he could be able to cleanse himself....till then he need to learn from parents.....or parents need to cleanse him....

My son starting bathing himself when he was four but I was always in the bathroom with him and making sure he cleaned everyhere.
When he turned five I would leave the bathroom door open and keep an eye on him from the lounge. His bathroom faces our lounge so it's easy to see him. He's becoming a lot more sensitive (if that's the word) with his body and prefers to shower and bathe himself without me there. I constantly check on him to make sure he has cleaned properly and on many occasions helped him with shampooing his hair.
