How do you remove the New Alerts box in the top left corner?

There appears to be no way to move this box off the screen. I clicked it on to read the alerts and now want it to disappear off the screen. It is blocking the beginning part of the search box and I like to see my typing to make sure I did not make a typo in my search term or words. Is there a way to delete this message box and how do you save the alerts that are listed? Thanks for any insights as I joined last night and trying to figure the site out. Bonnie Sayers
