Okay so I have to get an answer to this- what is the point of putting the salt on watermellon. I personally have never tried it but my husband always does it and when I asked why he did it, he just replied "I dunno." So I want to know why people do this. Does it draw out the sweetness or something? Anyone who does this please respond and tell me why it is so tasty to you!

This is the first time I heard someone putting salt in their watermelon, but tell you what, in my dad's hometown, they dip their watermelon slices in vinegar! However, they only do it on medium ripe watermelons (those that are not really red yet) and they say that the mix of sweet-sour taste of watermelon and the sourness of vinegar just go well together.

Yeah I think that the vinegar is much weirder! I have seen people all the time use salt but nevre the vinegar. I think that would have too much of an overpowering taste for me. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

For me I love putting salt on fruits. have tried doing the watermelon thing too. In my opinion the salt brings out the sweetness of the fruit. I have watched before that it compliments the taste. In my hometown we always put a bit of sugar to dishes that are salty, just same concept. Everything taste better when there is sugar. Hope I did enlighten you a little., :D

Thanks for your response. Yes it does make sense and I thought that it would probably be based on the drawing out the sweetness since this is why it is used in baking and cooking. Thanks again!

My parents do this all the time and one day, I tried it myself. I can't say I liked it, but thinking about it now, I can see why. For one, you're right, it does draw out the sweetness but it also draws out the moisture, thus making the fruit more juicier. Another reason I'd do it for kicks it to cut down on the sweetness. Sometimes, I'll just want the flavour, texture and taste of the mellon but none of the sweetness.

I never heard of doing that. I personally think he should not make a healthy thing unhealthy by doing that. I have seen people put salt on tomatoes and on apples.

I have never seen anyone put it on an apple. I have seen them put salt on tomatoes. Weird huh? Apples seems as strange to me as the watermelon.

We eat it either plain or sprinkled with sugar and if we have a cold with salt and pepper. It gives it a spicy taste i guess. Whats wrong with it?

I've always put salt on watermelon, and never knew it was unusual to some people. Never really thought of why, except salt makes it taste better. But, I suppose it could be a regional thing? Does your husband come from a different state than you? Just wondering, because when people say they've never even heard of doing it, it makes me think it's because it's only done in certain parts of the country.

I have never put salt on my watermelon, but I have put it on my cantaloupe before. It makes it taste better. I think it brings out the flavor more. I don't always put it on though, only if the melon is not very sweet.
