Hi guys I'm new mom here, I have a 9 month old baby and she has 2 teeth in the lower and 2 more starting coming out at the upper.
Can I start my baby to brush her teeth with a baby toothpaste now?
At now, I bought her a gum toothbrush and brushing it with water only and after wet gauze or clean towel.
Can I now take her to dentist for a flouride.
Mom's Dad out there need your advise.
Thanks!

As a previous dental assistant, I believe you should always clean the gums of a baby until their teeth arrive. When teeth are in, they should be brushed daily. I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 1 year old and they brush their teeth twice a day with baby toothpaste and a regular toothbrush. I believe it teaches them good habits to grow up with and is healthier for them. It is too soon for flouride, next time you see your dentist, ask him when he recommends flouride.

Hi ShadowBrook thanks for your response.
You are right, I bought a set ot silicon toothbrush with different style one for 0-6 months for gum,7-12 months for baby with 2 or more teeth and 1yr above a regular toothbrush. So great you teached them good brushing habit seems they enjoy it. I really had difficult time encouraging her brushing, I plan to bought tooth brush with tunes or musical for a help :)... Did you try it? how about electronic toothbrush.
Thanks again! happy my lot

I started them with the little toothbrushes that have the fat handles which makes it easier for them to hold on to. I brush my teeth when they do so they think they're BIG and they love to brush. I started my daughter with a battery-operated toothbrush but when it made noise she ran away. So, just a regular one for my kids works best.

I have a year old baby, and he has four teeth. I dont think it is nice to use floride as it is chemical and perhaps the baby would not be able to spit it out!
I just use a silicon baby brush and i do the same that you do.

what you are doing now is okay. there are toothbrush for a year old baby and you can but that one as soon as your child turns one. when my children are still that young i only use silicon brush for their teeth. i started brushing their teeth with baby toothpaste around two years old were they know how to spit it out already. thats what i did with my children, i have four and they are all teens now and have beautiful perfect teeth.

Buy a soft baby tooth brush and brush her teeth and gums gently just as you would if she had all of her teeth. If you brush your teeth at the same time she will learn what cleaning your teeth is about from a young age. We have a special song we sing before and after we brush teeth at our house - just the children that is! - and this makes teeth brushing special. Make it a big deal and get excited about how shiney her teeth look after they are brushed. Go overboard and have fun! Enjoy your baby, they just grow to fast!

I have brushed my daughter's teeth since the moment the first one appeared, i just used a baby toothbrush since it has extra soft bristles & then a 'milk' toothpaste which is suitable up to the age of about 6.
I have seen what happens when parents get lazy (most of my nieces have bad teeth which is very sad to see) so i decided from the beginning i would take care of my daughter's teeth as soon as they started coming in & i'd get her in to a habit of brushing them all the time.
She's now 2 & i usually brush her teeth once a day - sometimes she'll just run in the opposite direction or not open her mouth so as long as i can get that 1 brush in a day, i think it's worth it. I do get her teeth brushed twice a day on the good days & hopefully i am teaching her good habits that she'll continue with as she gets older.
Just buy your daughter a baby tooth brush - something with soft bristles so they're gentle on her gums & find a baby toothpaste suitable from a very young age & you're all set to go! You'll find initially it wont be so hard coz it's fun for them so that always made my life easier! Good Luck!
