Do you put salt and pepper on everything you eat?

Salt and pepper are just about the only seasoning hubby likes on his food. I know such basic seasonings are probably being used by everyone that eats, but I'm wondering if you put salt and pepper on everything you eat. (sweets excluded) Last night, my daughter and I had a discussion about some foods that we just wouldn't consider adding salt and pepper to and who we knew that did. At the time we were eating some fresh cantalope and she asked me if I had salted it. When I said no, she started telling me of several people she knew who sprinkled with both or just added salt. That lead us to discuss my mother-in-law, her grandmother. Everytime I fix baked potatoes (with butter, sour cream and cheese), she asks me if I added salt and pepper. Since I have never added salt nor pepper to my baked potatoes, I have to tell her no everytime. So that leads me to ask you.... Do you put salt and pepper on everything you eat? Is there anything you don't want either added to but you've seen others who do?

I don't put salt and pepper on everything, but definitely on most things, baked potatoes included. I like my food to taste seasoned, to have a bit of spice and flavor, so I add salt and pepper when I think it needs it. However, I always taste first. There are some people who just season out of habit without considering how the food really tastes beforehand. That's how these things end up being hazardous to your health.

I know what you mean. My dad always salted everything before eating, even if it was already salted.

Not on everything...especially not salt. I use lots of spices in my cooking, garlic, pepper, hot peppers, turmeric, onion...so with all those flavors, you don't need to salt everything, but salt is a flavor enhancer... so sometimes, I do. I don't necessarily on a baked potato because butter has salt in it, but I do put pepper on it. I always add spicy stuff to my meals...I make it very mild in flavor so everyone likes it, but add the extra spice for myself.

I have a high intolerance to sodium and salt, so I never add salt to anything. I don't even add salt to recipes. But, I do use a salt substitute on the really bland foods. I hardly ever use pepper not because I can't have pepper, but because I just don't feel like getting the pepper out and sprinkling it on food. I guess I'm just lazy in that regard.

Hi chileman. I must say your wife is the first I've heard of who salts a kiwi. That's one I've never even considered.

Let's see, I do not salt and pepper cottage cheese, but I know others who do. That is all that comes to mind right now. I do not salt and pepper everything, and I have not salted my melons or grapefruit since I have grown up. I also do not sweeten them. I tend not to use pepper, bt hubby does, and when he cooks for me, it tastes okay, I just never think of it.

Yes to salt. I add salt in everything I eat except for fruits. I need salt and pepper in potato chips and egg recipes. Otherwise no. Being an Indian I cannot cook any dishes without salt and chilly ground.

That's the same as me! I have to have salt with almost all my foods. Of course I don't put it on fruits, deserts, and some other things. But, I really want to have salt available just in case. :)

I do add salt(in moderation), and pepper to most everything including cantalope and watermelon. I also like pepper on baked potatoes. I don't use much salt when I add sour cream and cheese because they have salt in them.

Yes, basically I do put salt and pepper (along with other ingredients) on everything I cook. I try to go easy on the salt, but I have to be honest.

I hardly ever put salt or pepper on any of my foods. I do like salt on my corn though. I am not sure if that is normal or just something weird that I like. I would never dream of putting salt or pepper on something sweet.

I will sometimes add a little salt to corn, but prefer it when it's sweet and only requiring butter. I'm not overly fond of salting my sweets either, lol, but some combinations would be better than others.

I like using pepper in my cooking more than the salt, especially white pepper. I'd probably use more garlic if it didn't give hubby heartburn. :(

There are people that do use salt and pepper in their food but for me no. I like Ms. Dash and it works fine for flavor. But there are other seasoning like lemon pepper that has a little of both in them. So you have to be careful on how you use them. I try not to over season my food when using seasoning cause some times certain ones can clash and change the whole taste of what your eating. So I would have to say, just straight salt and pepper no but if it's mixed in some other seasoning that i'm using yes. Have a nice one.

I tried Ms. Dash before and I think they're very good as an alternative seasoning.

We used to salt all vegetables while cooking and automatically reached for the salt and pepper pots on the table when food was served. My daughter who is now 8 started objecting to this a fw years back saying she would rather add her own condiments. We agreed to this and since we have used a lot less salt because everybody only flavours the foodn to suit themselves. I am sure this is much healthier.

I put salt and pepper in pretty much everything that I eat. I either put that or cajun seasoning in things that I cook. I guess it's from my Louisiana background and my experience with southern food that does that. A lot of people I knew in the south put salt and pepper on everything, but there are people who do it in the north too...just not as many it seems like.

Last night I added some cajun seasoning to a pot of pinto beans and was surprised at how good it tasted. Usually I only sneak in a little onion powder with the salt and pepper, but I may have to add the cajun seasoning more often. Yummm...

Firstly I would like to say that Salt and Pepper are excellent seasonings, best for those who like steak and meat. I often use Salt and Pepper and as a chinese Salt goes int everything, which is why I am very sensitive to things that are so plain. Other then that Im also a australian, I eat western food and eastern, on western I only use salt and pepper on my subway sandwich, steak and more. Still even though I might not always use it Its good, but not good on everything for example yogurt, ice cream, carrot, celery and more. Just imagine eating those with salt and Pepper and that will make you think

Oh, no...not on everything I eat. Though I use salt more than pepper, lately, I have been trying to gradually cut off my need for them due to health concerns. Whether we want it or not, we all grow old and as we grow older, we have to be extra careful of what we eat.
