Blow out the candles, and make a wish

Put the candles on, blow them out and wish - Birthday cakes, you have to make a wish upon blowing out the candles, how many do this?

Whenever someone has a birthday in our house they get a cake, they blow out the candles and then they have to make a wish. But they cannot tell anyone what their wish is for if they do it will not come true. Does anyone else do this? Do you believe in it? What else is there that people do and make a wish on? Have you ever made a wish on something and it came true? If so what was it?

its pretty much common practice to have birthday candles on a cake.. birthday cake is the only food where someone can spit all over it an everyone clammers around wanting some of it LOL here.. the candles are kept by the birthday person.. saved to use for faery magicks and additional wishes throughout the year. and yes, the wishes ive made pretty much always come true, so im careful with the wishing and i make sure to not get greedy. alienating the fae would be a big mistake, and it took a bit of work to forge the relationship in the first place.. i have no intentions of losing it.

You are so funny, I need a wee and you had to go and make me laugh! I used to make the wishes, never getting too greedy and asking for the impossible, I guess my candles never worked properly as nothing ever came of anything and so I gave up a couple of years ago. I do still go along with the fun of it all though for the kids.

A lot of people do this... most of my family included, but not I. I believe that if you blow out candles, you blow away your luck and your positive energies. I find it preferable to light a candle each time I make a wish, on my birthday. However, some folks are strange, and they'll stick rigidly with an old custom, so when my son or his family make me a cake, I have to go with the flow and blow out the candles, even though I don't believe in blowing them out. Grrrrrrrrr. Brightest Blessings.

Yes, it is... I don't know how it all started but I believe the custom has been around for a very long time. Thank you... I prefer to do it that way, to welcome in the light, and I never blow out candles unless for the satisfaction of my kids... I always snuff them.

It is funny how custom sticks for such a long time, even if people know that it is just that a custom they still stick with it, I like your way of doing things.

Hello gemini, I believe that it is true although I am sure some wishes were not granted for some reasons. I had a lot of wishes that were granted and I repeatedly whisper it during my Bday, during Christmas, New year or to any wishing well I will bump..LOL!One of those was passing my licensure exam and I got it!

Yes that is standard in our household too with birthday cakes and the making of the wish when blowing out the candles. We also do it for whoever wins the wish bone from the chicken or the turkey too. I can't think of any of these wishes that have come true but we still wish them all the same. Ellie :D

You do it on who wins do you, do you not pull the wishbone with another? I always pull the wishbone with someone and whoever gets the biggest piece gets the wish.

Happy Birthday - A birthday cupcake
I do make a wish, but world peace isn't going to happen quickly. Another wish is for everyone to have food everyday. This year, I wished for several of my friends to get jobs and several are now working.

We buy a cake or bake one in my family for birthdays also. We also put some candles on there to be blown out by the person who is haiving the birthday also. We always make a wish before blowing the candles out too. We don't tell anyone what the wish was for either. I don't think it really works though. I do not recall any of my birthday wishes that ever came true. They may have over some time but not soon after making the actual wish. By the time the wish may have come true, I had already forgotten what I wished for on my actual birthday.

We always do that too! When my gran was 84 the other week we got the number candles an 8 and a 4 (putting 84 candles, well 85 if you count the one to grow on was just too much of a fire hazard!) and she had to blow them out and make her wish! I don't really believe in it at all , I just think it has become a nice tradition and nope I still haven't had any of my wishes come true but maybe that is cos I could never keep my wish a secret! lol xxx

I wonder where that tradition came from anyway? Even though I'm far from being a kid (well actually I am inwardly) I still make a wish before I blow out my candles on my birthday cake...and just where did the tradition of making a wish on a turkey wishbone come from also????

we also did the s ame thing. when we blew out the candles the birthday person made a wish. My wish came true several times. first when I was little I wished for a dog and i got one. then when I was in myh late twenties Iwished to meet a man 'whom I could fall in love with and marry and that came true when I was thirty. so sometimes wishes do come true.
