On what basis do you decide whether to respond to a discussion or not?

Because many a times i see around 40 people responding to a particular discussion and there are times where there are hardly any response to some of the discussions started provided both the "no response discussion" or an "ampteen number of response discussion" are discussions which have a very common topic only, there are nothing special about them...why is it happening then?

THAT is one very good question! Wheter I respond to a discussion or not is based on if the topic interests me or not - if I have no interest in the subject in question I find it difficult to give a "clever" response. Perhaps it is related to what you say very common topics that are easy to respond to without too much effort???? I don't know...
