Is reading too much a symptom of a problem?

Is there a problem with me if I read too much? I have been through rough times most of my life, and quite often I have found solace, even encouragement in books. But now, even when I am much better off, I can't keep away from them, sometimes compromising the socializing activities. Actually it is not just reading now, with internet, I have become some kind of addict. When when I am not reading, I am writing something. Is it good? I hope so.

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with spending a lot of time reading. I love both reading and writing, and I spend a lot of time doing both. As a freelance writer and editor, the written word is my livelihood. And I tend to be somewhat reclusive as well (my husband makes me go out on weekends just to get out of the house). Hmm... Maybe there's something wrong with me as well... Seriously, I don't think it's a problem unless its causing serious problems, like neglect of your job and family.

Yeah, now THAT WOULD be bad, but I have no family, & now that I'm retired, I keep 3 to 5 books going all the time! If there IS such a thing as "too much" reading, then all I can think of is that sylph-like shape one may develop after spending a lifetime with one's eyes glued to a page. Yep, that's the sole drawbak: Buttus Giganticus. Maggiepie

Hi dreamon01. If your partner takes you away from it all to refresh you, then that's really good. I guess I should also look at it this way. All my friends are trying to do is to get me a little refereshed.

i dont think so. i'd much rather sit at home with a good book sometimes, if that becomes the dominant force in my life, then yes i think it could be a problem. social interaction is a necesary part of life and it helps to keep you sane and well rounded. if you turn down all invites because you have the book waiting at home, you may want to reconsider. give your self a set amount of going out time where u have to interact with people and a set amount of time you can sit at home and read..

You just said what many times happens to me. I look for excuses to avoid an outing, or even hosting(though that is mostly unavoidable) just because I feel that they are robbing me of a great time.

It just means you like books. Maybe you're just not a social type of person and prefer your own company and a good book. Not everyone has to be a social butterfly. Reading is fun. Just enjoy it.

I read all of the time, so I don't see a problem with it. I can easily burn thru a book in a day or two, depending on how many pages it is. I prefer reading to using the computer. It's my "get away" from daily stress. I can block the world out for a while. I usually am reading a book even while watching TV, which drives my husband nuts. I read during the commercials. lol

I am also a reader and writer, but have found that I am not reading near as much as I used to since I retired! I thought that once I wasn't working I would be reading everything all the time and am now behind in all my reading. I have several books that I want to read and am behind in all of my magazines. I don't think that there is anything wrong with wanting to read and write since I believe that in reading comes knowledge no matter what form the reading takes. I also think that writing it a form of expression and often that is good for your mental health. I think it is good and good for you!

I love to read and I think it is a good hobby. They say that hobbies can be turn to addiction. But having a addiction to reading is good to me. Reading up us alot especially here in MYLOT. So if you are addicted will continue to enjoy it. They say that knowledge is power.

Very true. Knowledge is power. But I feel bad when I realize that I am not calling someone when I should or visiting someone when I should.

Does it make you happy? Because if the answer is yes then I say continue to do it. Sure, make time for friends and family but you could be doing much worse things! My husband says that I always have my nose in a book and like you, if I am not reading, I am writing. I have learned so many new things from reading and have visited so many fascinating places in books. Never be sorry for reading. You are doing your' brain a favor!

I don't think reading a lot is a problem. I also don't think writing a lot is a problem. I used to write copious amounts of poetry and short stories a few years back. It was just the way I dealt with life. It's much healthier than drinking or smoking, right?

Of course it is. Only it is hard to convince your dear ones, especially when they themselves are kind of afraid of books

Sounds like you made friends with the written word when times weren't so good, so why desert a trusted old friend now just because times are better? Reading shouldn't be your whole life, and you do need to make contact with people to some degree, but some of us just aren't the social type. If reading keeps you from doing things that are absolutely necessary, then it can be a problem, but if you'd rather read than visit that friend on a regular basis I don't see that as a problem. Of course this is coming from a hermit, so what do I know. ;)

If there is a problem with you reading to much, then i have the same problem. I have also had a troubled life and turned to books. I would rather read then do just about anything else. If someone would pay me to read i would be very happy. I don't view it as a bad thing just a part of who and what i am.

For sure it isn't anything bad. You just have a passion for written words, that's all. Some people can be envy of that even, couse they can't stand large books. I think that for you 500 pages are like nothing if you have free time, hehe.

I don't think there is a problem just because you read lots. If so, then I have the same problem. I have always been an avid reader. I even read books for book reviews and love it! I was just talking with my 14 yr old grandson tonight about reading. He has always been an avid reader, but just said he didn't like to read anymore.I told him it keeps your mind alert, gives you something to think about and discuss, besides building your knowledge. I have been known to get a good book and not put it down until it is fully read!

The very fact that you are able to find inspiration in a book, speaks for your intellectual qualities. Life should be lived to the fullest, and I find that reading can be an enjoyable getaway from life's daily stresses. If you are only sometimes compromising your social activities for a good book and a comfortable evening, this is not a problem. It is your way of letting go of stress and enjoying your life. As for writing, it is a way of expression. You can release your pent up thoughts and energies, as well as share those thoughts with people who will help you see other sides of the coin. I think you should continue to follow your penchant for reading and writing. It is a good thing!

I cannot imagine a day without reading or music. Just as much as I like ro read, the newspaper or a good book, I also enjoy music. As a matter of fact, I enjoy listening to music, while I am reading. I do not think it is any form of escapism. It is just a way of enjoying life, and giving thanks to the various persons who have gathered their talent to give you books and music. Quite often I wish that I had the talent to create good literature. My attempts to do so have not been great successes. To me a good book brings things more vividly to life, than even the best movie.

i dont think you can ever read too much. if it is a problem....well i have a BIG one. im 17 and i cant stop reading so much sometimes i get yelled at in class. that and i occasionally forget to do anything else. not everyone has to socialize all the time, plus, a reading addiction is much better than some other addiction dont you think?

Hi. We could've been twins. I have lost and submerged myself in the written word every since I was a small child. I have always found solace, comfort, joy, excitement, and learning opportunities in it. Avid reading is not just for bad times. There's nothing wrong with prefering to curl up with a good book than socializing (sometimes). Your are a true reader. And sometimes with that comes wanting to write to share your thoughts and feelings, even if it's with strangers. The internet can be a reader's paradise. I think that this is good. Just think (only for a minute) of all the other horrible things that you could be addicted to. (smile)

I'm sorry but I can't for the life of me think why you would think reading is in any shape or form bad for you. I have been reading all my life and books have helped me through some very bad times. I was unable to finish High School but when I took the Mensa word test I rated genius. I did not do so well on Math but I am still proud of it. I thank God the thing I can do is read. If any one is giving you a problem about reading just tell them there is a lot more bad things you could be doing. For some reason this is under my daughters name. My name is patms1.

I don't think that's a problem. It's a good habit to read a lot. Read more to gain more knowledge. But don't read until don't wan to join other friends, it's unhealthy.

Reading is a very good habit and can rarely seen now a days. If you have a flair to write it is also good. You have to develop that and write more. But too much of any thing is bad. If you are addicted to reading and writing it will gradually affect your personality. In my opinion you have to make a control over this. You have to fix a time table for reading and writing and it is better to fix some particular hours every day for reading and spend the rest of the time for other activities and socialising. Never compromise your life with anything else. Addiction to anything, even if it is to books, reading, writing or to internet is not good. You need to divert your activities while spending quality time for your hobbies.

There is nothing wrong with reading. Reading can be your inspiration. You can even relate to every day's life by just reading.Reading can be comforting.

Nothing wrong with you at all. Some people watch movies for the same reason. You lose your reality for awhile and venture into a different world. It can be very therapeutic.
