I upgraded my main computer the other week seek, and with all the fuss about Linux at the moment, with so many new PC's being lunched with Linux, I decide to try it on my older machine.
First attempt, after reading various sites decided that Ubunta Linux (Hardy Heron Version) would be the best choice for me. I downloaded the Distro, burnt it to disk making a Live CD, tried it, liked it and then installed it.
After installing which was very easy and straight forward, I noticed a few glitches. It seemed to running slow and Firefox kept freezing. Not a good start.
After consulting the Forum, I thought, I would perhaps try a different version. So I downloaded gOS but then this would fit on a CD, its about 50 MB too large. Then I downloaded, PCLinuxOS 2007 (PCLos), and Linux Mint.
Burnt PCLos to disk, making a Live CD, and tried it. WOW, a breath of fresh air. I liked it from the first moment, so I quickly installed it. Updated it with the built in Package manager, and all I can say is that it is excellent. I didn't bother with Linux Mint as I am enjoying this version so much.
My computer runs faster now than under Windows XP, and I haven't had and freezing, No Viruses etc also.
I would recommend trying it, download the iso from the website and burn it on to CD, creating a Live CD. You can then try it for a while from the CD, choosing to install it when you are completely happy with it.

i have been using Windows XP Service Pack 2, due to its low requirements, and a bit stability.
Vista has a high requirement, many applications still don't work on it,
Linux is an open source Operating System,
I advice you to keep XP and Linux together in your system..
But tell me from where did you get Linux, i also need one

ywh ,, i think you should start using linux now..i have used windows XP,vista,98 and 2000 and none of them can compete with linux....
new KDE and gnome gives you a lot more.and the desktop managers such as beryl, compiz gives you the ultimate desktop experience you had for sure..
so just try it...ubuntu will be great to use,,. but if you are more familier to the windows i suggest using the kubuntu instead.
