What do you think is the best time to retire and start to enjoy life pleasure without any work commitments?
I have seen people retiring in their early 40's and enjoying their life while some shifted their interest to something else to make use of their free time making it more meaningful.
What are the things that you would want to do when you are retired or would you still want to work until the right time comes?

I don't think there is a best age for retirement, it will be different for each individual. If you work in a job that gives you little pleasure or fulfilment you may want to retire as soon as possible. If you feel your job is enjoyable, worthwhile or important, you may want to keep on working for as long as you have the energy and the health to do so.
I don't believe that anyone should think they will do all the things they want to do after they retire. None of us knows when our life will end. It could be forty years from now, it could be forty days. It's not a good idea to wait for old age to get the best out of life, do it now and enjoy life now. Life is precious and should not be wished away. What you wish for should not be put off until 'one day'.

Hie paid2write, it's true life is too short and when the time is right and that person is ready then it should not be post phoned. The main thing as long as that person is happy with his decision and able to live comfortably. Most probably he will have a better quality of life where he could pursue his dreams when he was unable to before and more quality time too with the family.

I think that once you get to a point in life where you have successful completed all your goals and have enough money to survive than no matter how old you are you should be able to retire, and if I retire I would want to spend every minute with my fiance because I love her with all my heart and soul, even though I would be retired I would still want to work some even if it just mylotting and I am sure my fiance feels the same way,so that way we will be able to buy everything we need or want.

Hie, yes that will certainly be greatto be able to enjoy leisurely with someone you love by then. And I believe at that stage, it is just another beginning of a different phase of life. Hopefully Mylot would last until then or something like this site to occupy some of the free time otherwise especially me,I will be pretty bored without it

Good question I'll like to retire in my forties and do some traveling. If I do work after retirement it will be for myself maybe become a professionally writer/blogger just doing something to keep my mind active. I see so many people retire and then come back to work because the money wasn't enough to live off of. On the other hand I some say they want to but they just can not afford to. We all need a plan.

Hie Harman, thank you for the response. I agree with you that each person should plan and if the circumstances allow an early retirement, so be it.
As long as that person still have a purpose in his life and able to enjoy life to the fullest and content with themselves.
Good luck and happy posting!

I would like to continue working part time to keep busy and stay in touch with the real world. I would also love to travel to far off destinations and explore new places, but I'll need a lot of $$$ to do that, so I guess I'll have to continue working full time for a while so that maybe I'll be able to visit those exotic locales when I'm a bit older.

Hie Di, I am sure you will get to enjoy traveling as you have already planned ahead which is very good. No doubt a lot of hard work and determination is needed but the fruits of it will taste so wonderful at the end.
Everyone has a different approach of achieving their goals and fulfillment in life but I believe if we work towards it, we will eventually achieve it whether retire now or later in life.
Good luck and happy posting!

i want to retire when my hubby retires, he is 7 yrs older than me, so if he choose to retire at 60 i get to retire at 53. if he'll choose to retire earlier like 55 y/o i'll get to retire at 48. but it's more likely to be 20 yrs from now...
we still have a lot to consider... we need to make sure that there is enough money for our baby's university fund, enough money for medical emergencies and enough money for retirement...
presently, we are investing in ourselves, trying our best to study and learn everything we could in real estate... i'd like to have enough passive income to support my lifestyle, i am committed to create multiple income streams for our future. at the mo we invest in precious metals, mf and bonds.
we live a simple life, we travel only once a yr now that we have a baby. we decided to live a health life, my hubby is a health buff, he is into free range and organic stuff. we are frugal, we weigh our needs vs our wants.
come retiment time, we are going home to the Philippines, to our little place by the sea, by then i could see a home big enough to accomodate the family if and when they come home, because surely our kid/s wont want to go home w/ us if they are living theire own little life somewhere else... i'll buy myself a small motor boat and a yacht if i could afford it hehehe... i could see a swimming pool at the back of the house and i could see me and my hubby sipping pinacolada hehehe. happy dreaming...enjoy!

I think as soon as you can afford it unless you have a passion for your job, life is way too short to be spending a whole day doing something you don't really like all that much...plus as you get older you start to depend on your job too much as you spend too much time there so when it comes time to retire youi can't seem to cope with not having it.

Hie lilaclady, I believe so too and those workaholic will find it much more difficult to deal with this and more so with the present economy.
Some do it early due to health reasons that is unavoidable.
But I think once you get to love a job very much and commitments will get in the way and it's very to hard to let go. I admire this in people who are very passionate in what they do and they are willing to work till they are no longer on this earth. I have yet to find something I am passionate about.
And retirement is still a long way more for me to consider but the main thing is to embrace it with open arms when the times come.
Best Wishes and Happy Posting!

It's really up to individual preference. There are people like Alex Ferguson (Man Utd manager) who at the age of 67 is still going strong and has the passion to continue doing what he likes.
There are some who dream about retiring at 50 and travel round the world after that. They will usually slog when they are younger in the hope to relax when they are older.
I would want to live a balanced life all my life. I want to be active all my life. Life is unpredictable and I rather live life to its fullest everyday. If I am doing something I like, I would love to do it everyday of my life.

Yes, true enough. What;s life without some fun and enjoying it to the fullest when we are still here and able to. It all comes to how passionate the person is about their work or life. And people should be more aware of their passion in life and pursue it than just work for the sake of getting a pay at the end of the month.
I wouldn't want to push everything to my retirement days either.

Hie Kun, well! You can if you want to, it's just have to work and smart while you're young .
I have come across few people who did and enjoying life to the fullest now. Then you could take your sweet time to do what you want, no one to boss you around :)
It is possible and imagine retiring in style...lol
Have a nice day and happy posting!

If you have a great which fulfil you well, you will not completely retire until you pass away from the world, such as the dentist. In my country, men must retire at 60 and women at 55 years old. Most of the dentists will start a private clinic after retirement. But if you work for having enough money to keep a normal life, the situation is very different, and I think most of the people are in this situation. So we are waiting for retirement and then we have pension and no need to work for money, and can do anything we like. For these people, the earlier retire the better.
For me, I like my work and hope to work till 60 or 70 years old. Then I will do something different that I and others have not expected I would do. That will be a beginning of a new life for me.

Hie xplp, you must be very committed in you work and truly happy. Not many people are as lucky as you. You are right that some people take for granted that the pension will sustain them a good life after they retire.
But as we all know, anything can happen in between and this people might not live that long to see their pension. And if a person is happy and still able to work till their old age, this will keep their mind active.
Moreover they will feel useful as they could still contribute and not a burden to the society.

I suppose, whenever you are ready to - I mean, seriously ready. Many youngsters nowadays do not want to work - but the question is how will they survive? On Mummy or Daddy? For me, it's financial and psychological. When there is enough for me to live comfortably (not luxuriously) for the rest of my life, it will be simply heaven to call it quits. No more beating the traffic jams, meeting deadlines, fire-fighting problems, handling customers and office politics. I know some people who are so passionate about their profession - they do not want to retire till they die. I guess I am not - I'm burned out. I'd like to have time to live my life, spend time with my family, continue anew with the interests and hobbies I'd left aside, travel to places never been before.

Hie Lazeebee, I would have done the same too, enjoy life to the fullness and embrace it when I am ready. The youngster are too comfortable nowadays with attitudes of enjoy now and worry later, in denial that the parents won't be here forever for them. Whether we are happy or not and since we are still young (considering ), one should make full use of the time while they still can.
And life will be more meaningful and then we could enjoy the fruits of it when we are ready to retire.
