Massively multiplayer online role-playing game are often very addicitive. Popular games such as World of Warcraft, Guildwars, Everquest, Age of Conan, etc can have players spending over 1 whole week playing without sleep and splurging thousands of dollars over the games.
So what exactly makes these games so addictive? Not only to teenagers but to even adults ranging from 20 to over 40 years old. As a gamer myself, I have came up with afew conclusions
1) An escape from reality
2) Sense of satisfaction when accomplished which cannot be achieve in reality as easily
3) A never-ending journey(Doesn't complete like normal games do)

first i would say that while playing online games, you do not have access to the cheat codes. so the the game remains all the more difficult as well as interesting. you have to labor hard for your companions as well as on some occasions, you get to the next level due to their help. it therefore brings in a sense of brotherhood, some fellow feeling. you may deny it but it is the unseen bond which binds us together. and when it is put to test in a play-station in an online game, it becomes all the more overwhelming as well as addictive.

I like MMORPG too. Game is attractive but i don't think it was a escape from reality. It is virtual but i play it because i enjoy the story and the virtual world, but it does not mean i try to escape from reality.
