I've read a comment on medis stating "In this age of intensive media coverage,it is no longer possible for a soceity to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually diminished." Do you have comments on cynical statement on media? Is the statement applicable to your soceity?

In some ways, I think it's true. I suppose it depends on the definition of hero. If a hero is someone that we hold to a higher standard than other people, then scrutiny would diminish their reputation. No one could have their lives put under a microscope the way the media does with the people they focus on and not have something imperfect uncovered. An action, a belief, something. And, if we expect heroes to be better than others, we won't be so forgiving of those imperfections. Of course, if heroes are viewed as just as flawed as others, but who also are noble or did something noble despite their flaws, then maybe the media coverage wouldn't completely diminish their heroism.

We still have heroes. We still need heroes. I believe that most people don't care what you did 20 years ago as long your life now is bearing good fruit. However, the media has influenced opinions of many people based solely on gossip and rumors. It is very hard to live one's whole life without regret or mistakes. Hillary Clinton comes to mind as one who was crucified by the press even though no criminal charges have ever been filed against her. Then again, we have Tim Russert, the ultimate in media professionals who just passed away. Apparently the only way to receive such high praise from the media is to truly live a life of integrity where no rumors can find dirty enough soil to put down roots, such as Tim Russert. We need more people like him.

I think media could sometime be a toxic. I could say that some of them are not working for the public's interest but of their own motives. Tim Russert is a great asset to the country. Surely, he is a great loss.I hope there will come a journalist that is as promising as him.

Unfortunately, it is a true statement. The world we live in thrives on gossip, rumors and mistakes that live in our closets. The media lives on finding the good, the bad and the ugly in anyone's life who is fortunate enough to find their good deed or achievement lifted up for all to see. Strange that the human race cannot allow a joyous occasion to be unblemished by past errors, however, it is in our nature to be cynics at heart.

Well, I hope media will be very careful then on their next step in the future. I think it's quit difficult for them to win back the public's trust.
