being a christian its my duty to confess my sins to the priest.
i shouldn't say this but i hate confessing.
i was told that god is everywhere and is always watching you...
if he is always watching us then he would be aware of our sins.then whats the point of confessing our sins to the priest?we can directly ask for pardon from god.
i think few secrets should remain as secrets.
whats the point of sharing it with the priest.
whats your opinion??

I don't think that there is any where in the bible that tells us to confess our sins to any one but God himself. We need to confess our sin so that after acknowledging them we hopefull will stop doing that particular sin. It is also to bring us closer to God. If our sin has hurt anyone then we need to go apologize and correct that sin.

deebomb,
I agree with you! I don't feel comfortable confessing certain things (sexually oriented) to someone who allegedly has NO experience or background in! But hey, that's just me!

You said that so well and I agree with you completely. We must confess to God and no one else.

We can confess directly to God! Many people are doing it everyday, but Catholics must confess to the Priest, because the Church needs your money. This isn't about God this is about Money and the Church. Catholicism is Big Business and the Church needs your money. Its very important that you remain faithful to your Priest and your Catholic Church, because they need your Money very badly!

No, they don't get your money from going to Confession, that is still free as far as I know. They get your money by forcing you to donate if you want to "belong" to the church, which you would need to do if you want to get married or baptize your children. Actually I had a conversation about this with some friends and found that most churches and synagogues have ways of doing this, whether they charge dues, or force donations, or whatever, they will get your money.

I agree, if you can find the movie and it should be no problem doing so rent "STIGMATA" on what you think about confessing and how GOD is everywhere. It's not a religious movie but gets into some unknown writings in the Vatican. hey if ya don't like it i'll send ya the money for the rental.I SAY AN ACT OF CONTRITION EVERY DAY AND I THINK THAT GODS RIGHT THERE LISTENING.

Anthony, far as I know there is no where in the Bible that say it is a Christian DUTY to confess their sins before man. In the old Bible days the Priest were indeed mediators between God and men, BUT the big BUT, they offered sacrifices on behalf of the people to God. This is no longer necessary because jesus Christ came and paid the price for our sins, so there is no longer the need for the Priests to act as mediator.
We are told in 1John 1. 9 to confess our sins to God and he is faithful and just to forgive our sins when we confess them. It does not say anythign anywhere from Genesis to Revelations to confess to a priest.

well antony do you really believe it is sharing with the priest?it is not necessary. but can you reall confess to yourself alone ? to any of your parents? to friends? to your spouse?i dont know how yu will react but what i men is that the priest is a respected person of the society and the father. he is not interested in knowing what you have done but you repeat the words for confession actually to yourself in the presence of the priest for self realisation and perhaps promising to your own self not to repeat it ever again.

When I was a little girl I would sit face to face with my priest and just spill my guts . Back then those were small little sins.As I grew older I would go behind the screen and feel somewhat shy. Now, I don't go to confession all that much . I have talked to the lord and he knows I am sorry for my bigger sins. He can feel what is in my heart . I will still go , but I will be as vage as possible.

i don't confess my sins to the priest or to any person. I confess my sins to GOD directly. I don't believe in having someone to act as a mediator between me and my GOD! I just go straight to Jesus in prayer and confess my sins and ask for forgiveness from HIM.

I am a Catholic but I too is not used to confessing my sins to the priest. Whenever I did something wrong I directly share it with God in my prayers and I would sincerely as for forgiveness for what I have done. I think it's just up to an individual's belief, if one is comfortable in sharing it with a priest then it's fine, and for us with like beliefs, I think it's also fine...After all, God has the sole authority to pardon all of us...

good day. the saying the truth hurts take precedent here. It's hard to confess our sins because it hurts to tell and accept the truth. To admit and ask forgiveness for it and partly saying our darkest secret leaves us to feel vulnerable. I think confession is all about those.

Hi! antony i do agree that few secrets could remain as secrets unless you feel guilty about what you have done. Either ways its alright.

It's not that God needs to know your sins. As you write here he already knows it. The question is... do you know your sins and why are they wrong? I think that this is why Christians are confessing their sins. Although I won't say that you should do it or something, couse I myself don't do it often (once for a few years).

I have to confessing my sins too, I agree with you that there is not sense in confessing our sins, that is because I have learned that in live is not good to share our secrest with anyone because in some point they can be use against us, i know it is supused that priest must to keep it in secret but if you do a research in some cases they have to spread it, some time ago I heard a news about a priest that have spread the secret of a girl that was infected with a virus and she was spreading it and infecting males, of course that is a valid reason but anyway it show that our secrets would be not safe with anyone.
I agree with you idea bout ask for pardon to god instead to confessing it to a priest, I do that sometimes I just pray to god and ask for pardon of my sins and I feel really good because I know good never would spread my sins, because men are able to corrupt but god never would fail you even if you think he is not there, I know more people would not agree about not confessing with a priest.

Hi antony2best, I live in Canada and here the Catholic church no longer requires that you confess to the priest. If you want to do so you have to ask the priest. I am not a Catholic but I have friends that are, and I have attended the Mass. Is it still a requirement where you live, or is it a choice? Blessings.

I go to a protestant church. Protestants don't usually do "confession" to a minister or priest and confession of personal sin is supposed to be done in private prayer. In Judaism, of which I know only a little, public communal confession of sins is made on Yom Kippur. The congregation asks forgiveness of specific sins that anyone in the community may have committed. They do it aloud in a group, as I understand.
I think that confessing to a spiritual leader who can then guide you in how to make restitution or amends is healing and helps facilitate real repentance. However, many priests are not so wise as to do a good job with this these days it seems (from the news). Also, if a priest is a strictly moral, conservative person who cares about his parishoners, it will probably pain him to hear specific sins confessed. Confessing to someone else lays a burden on that person.
I personally think if you have someone who is a wise, strong, spiritual mentor that you can confess to and receive instruction, then it would be healthy. But doing it out of obligation or to someone who is not really ready to help you shoulder your sin burden is not going to help anyone. You may be better off in private prayer and meditation.

I think it is only Catholics that confess to a priest, if I am not mistaken. I was raised Catholic and always hated it. I have not gone to confession since right before Confirmation, since that was the last time I was forced to go. (But I should note that I stopped going to church a few years later, anyway.) I think anyone can "confess" to a priest but it doesn't necessarily mean anything. If you are truly sorry you can confess to God and he should forgive you. I think the purpose of confession is so the priest can tell you to say prayers as punishment. That is always how I understood it as a kid anyway. I think I could do that without being told, anyway, if I wanted to.

Hey I could make a whole list of those things that were added to this religion (which I was born to follow but denied later) for far less ethical reasons than you may think. Do you know when confesing was originally used? After 300ab and what was it's main use later on at arround 1000ab till 1600ab+? To make money for the pope! Starting little before medieval times people had to pay money to the church so that it would forgive their sins do you find that logical???? Christianity is a really great releagion and I try to obey and follow most of the things that its' ethics sais BUT the religion wich we call christianity is not the true one. The relegion we call christanity is the relegion that some priests at 300ac decieded was correct and the one that best suited their interests. As I said before I can tell you many things that opose the true ethics of christianity and many others tha contradict themselves but the point here isn't to make you leave your releagion the point I want to make is that the best christian in my opinion is the one who reads the words of god and follows them the best he can not by his acts but with his thoughts and feelings.
