It would depend greatly on what kind of work from home you would be doing online. Would you just be on the lookout for some opportunities or are you being hired by a company to work online from home? Even though you wouldn't need to commute to your work you'd still have to pay for the internet connection, your phone and whatever else is required to perform the duties required of you. Does the company offer some kind of reimbursement for that? Don't forget that they also have the "feeling" that just because you work from home for them that they are in a position to offer you a very low salary. You'd be lucky if you even got minimum wage.
Furthermore I think that working outside the home is more beneficial for you in the long run because at home you will not be required to interact with others in the same way that one does in an office. This also implies that your chances of promotion are also greater than being stuck at a computer at home where there is hardly any chance at all of any advancement in the profession of your choice.

Well are you talking about your company giving assignments to you & you complete them at home.Well that is a bit better as there is not much difference in your salary & you save on travel costs & time & can give ample time to your family.
But, the flip side is you lose the enthusiasm of office environment.
Now coming to a different scenario when you are working full time in a dedicated company, you definitely earn more than some part time online program.
