Does your child have attention deficit disorder?

my son needs to be evaluated for this over the summer and if he has it will then need to be evaluated by the child study team in his school so that they can help during school hours. he is so smart and reads exceptionally well, spells well and can retain all kinds of information but he cannot focus to get his work done and does not stay on task repeatedly. also he is very sloppy with his handwriting when having to construct sentences. i have no intention of putting him on any meds for this but want intervention if he needs it so he can learn coping skills to stay focused and so that he understands that he is not 'weird" as he says. any info and hands on experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

How do you know if your child needs to be evaluated?
My son is going into second grade. I am wondering if his issues are just typical little boy behaviors or if I need to speak with his Dr. He is not aggressive or mean. He is very smart. He has trouble when he works in groups. He spends a few days at his grandparents at least once a month. When he comes home, he is very hyper. It takes me a full day to get him calmed down. Literally like he's bouncing off the walls. He's very loud. He has trouble keeping his hands to himself at school and at home. Not in a mean way though. I just don't know what to do.

my son's issues are more with not being able to focus and stay on task. if you think there is an issue my advice is to always follow your instincts when it comes to your child. have him evaluated. it cannot hurt. the longer it goes undetected the worse it gets. if he has ADD OR ADHD he needs extra help in school and is entitled to it but you cannot get the help unless there is a diagnosis. good luck.
