Is there anyone out there that could give me advice on how to publish my poems!

I started writing poems when I was a 3rd grader! We did not have the money for cards, so mine were always homemade... with my artwork, and of course, my made up poem about the occasion. So..... at this stage in my life, there is time to be creative again. I have looked up sites on the Internet, not sure if they are legit. Thought you may give me some advice on a company, or just how to get started?

I have no experience with writing poems or, specifically, getting anything published. I have been told to be wary of people offering to print a book for you as a way to call yourself published. Often you put out a lot of money and have a hard time getting someone to carry your book. I picked up an old book at the library about this once, but it has been so long that I can't remember much.

Thank you Daddyoftherose for you comments! I lost lots of my poems over the years. They were in my old computer, and guess what!!! I have the computer back (my daughters) and my next step is trying to retrieve them.... wish me luck.

Quite honestly, what I would do is just write my poems, and create my own poem book and then publish that... but I don't trust ANYONE with my poems.... considering I lost my first book I wrote ever...:\

Thanks Pitgull! That is exactly why I have not done anything... they are so personal to me... and I have shared them, big mistake! So, just write them for family members now. My last was of a new born baby and her mother... Hand in Hand! Most of mine are inspired by by my faith, love of nature, a loved one, friends, life in general, or how I feel at a given moment. Anyway, think there is not many here on this site that are interested in poetry. Guess my question is how do you get the right contacts to start?
