I would suggest small pieces of fruit that have been peeled and cut for a good start, celia4evr. Most toddlers like the taste of fruit, and apples, pears, etc., aren't quite so messy. Small pieces of chicken or turkey also make good choices. Also good are the usual cookies and snack cakes.

I've noticed he really enjoys pickles lately. He isn't much into anything near chocolate he hates it. I figured out he enjoys his independent eating ( spreading the food all over the floor). But when he is really hungry its time to attack mommies plate!

It's hard to think of things that don't make a mess, celia - but the nurse at our baby clinic used to tell us to peel a nice, juicy apple, then cut it into wedges and tie them into a piece of muslin. The toddler could chew the muslin and taste the apple juice without choking on big chunks of apple when they broke off. I used to also make toasted cheese sandwiches and cut them into four fingers. These are easy for little children to eat.
