When baby cries, is it the mother's instinct or the noise that wakes her?

I have a six month old and I wake whenever she cries, while my husband can sleep right through it. Sometimes it seems she isn't even crying that loud. So I was wondering what you all thought, because I'm scared that sometimes I don't wake up and don't even know it.
