Do you prefer condo units from conventional houses?

My wife and I are looking for a new home and we are torn between a condo unit or a house and lot. A condo unit is more convenient but a house is preferable for a family of 4.

If you live in a condo you have to deal with neighbors living very close to you and, since many condos are rented out, you never know who is going to be nextdoor or above or below you. With a single family home you have more privacy which is why I've always preferred a house to a condo.

If you decide to go with a condo, just make sure that you check into the board members, management company and ask them if there are reserves in the funds for repairs. Make sure you go to the meetings!!! So many people think that it isn't important to attend, but it is. Trust me. Without resident involvement, these complexes turn downhill quickly. Condos are great if you don't want to do the yard work or maintain the outside of your unit. However, I live in a condo now and can't get past the fact that I do not have my own yard to let my children play in. I want to hang a hammock on a tree and lay reading to them in the shade. Or I want to start a fire and roast marshmallows with them and let them camp out in the backyard. Can't do those things, along with many others, in a condo complex. Privacy is almost non-existent in a condo as well. You are attached to other units and most times the walls are very thin. I hear my neighbors flush their toilet! Go with the house!! Good luck to you.
