I suggest getting a camera that you can auto and manual focus and thats digital...i can suggest an SLR camera so you can get different lenses for it.

I have to agree with Feris, no matter how advanced the equipment is, you have to develop or have one by instinct, a photographer's eye for things. You have to see the picture in different aspects of life, nature, everything around you. I have always had a natural eye for these things, and have loved photography for many years. You also need to read up and decide if you want to set up a darkroom and use a traditional 35mm camera, or if you will be using a DSLR camera and 'developing' (editing) your pictures on your computer. I started out by using a 35mm film camera and learning to develop the film and pictures myself. I received a DSLR this past Christmas from my s/o and I love it, it takes amazing pictures, it is the Nikon D40.

There are many books on photography written for beginners. You can borrow from the library or buy one that suits you. Photography in its own has advanced due to the advancing of digital technology. The newest point and shoot digital cameras now come in 10MP or more with other capabilities as well. However, no matter how advance technology is, the photographer's skills are the most important. Ever photographer knows what is creative and what to do with creativity.

With me, I have been doing this since I was a kid. But, when I wanted to buy my first serious camera, I got advice from people on Wetcanvas who have been taking photos for a really long time. I am also planning on taking a free class through our local community college on digital photography even though I pretty much feel like I have a good grasp of it. I might learn something anyway. Here is the Wetcanvas website. It's mostly art related, but there is a photography section. http://www.wetcanvas.com
