I'm a dog person, but my 18 year old dog died last year. Know I think I'm ready to buy another dog. I want him to be medium sized, to need normal excersise, to be playful but that can also be calm when needed. I don't have a big garden so he'll have to adapt and wait for me to come home to take him out. What really worries me is that everyone in my house goes to work in the morning and I go to the university till 3pm, so my dog will have to stay home alone from 7 till 3. What kind of dog do you suggest? He was to be able to stay alone without getting depressed.

Don't buy a dog, adopt a dog. Just go to the animal shelter and rescue one. In fact rescue two if you're concerned about a dog being alone all of the time. If there is another dog present they can keep each other company.

I suggest you go to the local shelter or rescue and look for an adult that fits your requirements. There are plenty around that are looking for a home, and you don't appear to be in a position to get a puppy as puppies cannot be left alone for that long. They really need to be taken out and played with/trained/given other stimulation at least every two hours and even that is stretching it.
As a general rule how long a puppy can hold it is their age in months plus one, meaning a two month puppy can hold it maximum three hours, however it most likely will not and not being there to take the pup out when needed is going to prolong housetraining by weeks or even several months.

in my opinion ,buy a pug ,its small, easy to handle, very popular, and has a good habit of following and obeying his master.
