I interpret this quote as "Why am I afraid of whatever I'm afraid of?" "What caused this fear to manifest?"

Well, this is a soul-searching quote. People are more often than not interested in finding out the nature of other people and perhaps judging them by the scant data they obtain. They forget that they themselves are also human beings and that they need to know themselves well first before judging others. And the thing which they need to improve upon first is their fears. Only if they can overcome their fears can they become really enriched persons. Then only they can value other people for what they are really and respect them for that.
