early this morning my mom and i went to the province to fetch my grandmother and my cousin. its a 2 hour drive to their place. in the middle of a stop light, when it turn to green i speed off but was stop by a bunch of traffic police. at first i didn't know what kind of violation i was in but later i found out thru them that i am in the wrong lane of the road he said that the first three lane is for cars making the left turn and the next two is for the cars going forward. i was in the second lane and then i found out that im in the wrong lane and violated the traffic rules. he then ask for my license and told me that i need to have a seminar on the rules and regulations in the road. i beg him to just let me go and instead i will pay him for my violation that i did. at first he is reluctant to give in with my suggestion but later on he give in but ask for a 500 pesos for it. i though of giving him 200 pesos first but he wants to have a 500 pesos bill so i just ask my mom for the money then give it to him and just speed off. did i do the right thing bribing the traffic officer to let me go? help me out please, its bothering me right now.

Honestly, you did the wrong thing.
If what you stated in your post implies that a law officer apprehended you legally, he was doing the right thing. By bribing the officer that caught you just implies that you tolerate corrupt acts. Also, encouraging the officer to accept bribes instead of doing the right thing and later on, that officer may prefer bribes than doing his responsibility.
The only thing good that I could see was that the officer didn't charge you with bribing an officer which would have a greater punishment than attending those seminars.

Well, everything is situational.
You had an urgent thing to do so you didn't want to be delayed which had you bribing the officer. I guess you'd be different next time. You'd know your lanes and accept consequences when found responsible for an unlawful act.
Don't beat yourself too much about it, you learned and that's enough.

here in our country the philippines almost all the traffic enforcers do that to drivers especially to drivers of public transportation. i know i am wrong in bribing them but i think it will not give me more headache by going to a seminar and paying after it and i think i help the traffic enforcers financially because i know they only have low salaries and by giving in with their demands i can help their families as well.

Well your conscience is bothering you right. I guess it was wrong to bribe that but I guess in our place this is a common thing drivers usually do when they break traffic violations. I hope you've learned something from your violations and take it as it is.

i regret doing it but for some reason i think i did the right thing because having your license confiscated is a hard thing there are many things to do to get it back so i think its ok to do that. and to others who are answering in my discussion don't be so CLEAN. ever driver here in the metropolis have done that once or maybe every time they have a traffic violation. those who are mad at me for doing these are the one who don't have a car and haven't drive ever in their entire life.

hi bullyvirgil, i was just thinking that if you would have paid the voilation charges how much it would be? i think that you should not have bribed them because this is the reason they dont take their job seriously and someone learns to ask and then some give bribe and then the fear is gone and again voilation of traffic and then accidents. hope you have understood what i want you to understand.

i paid them 500 pesos for that silly violation. i know that i must never bribe them to get away with my mistake but having thought of having a whole day of seminar with traffic rules and then fall in line to just get my license back it's so exhausting for me. i know that by doing it traffic enforcers will not do their job seriously and rely on the same tactics when an offender will do other mistakes at the road but what can i do i don't want my license to be taken away from me?

First and foremost this kind of thing should not be asked at all......bribing is bribing and you know its wrong. What you should have done was to explain. You should have talk to them in a nice way to explain you are not familiar with traffic route since you are not from there. This usually helps.
Its funny how filipinos always blame the government about being too corrupt well in fact it is also the people who attributes to the increase of such practice.
I would also like to say something, I don't know if you will hate me but I'm sorry I'm just this frank and I am also proud being a filipino (good and bad sides of it, whose country is perfect).
Being a filipino myself, I find it insulting that you have to post such discussion just to gain more points, when in fact you are generally painting a very bad picture about your country in general. Not all people do bribe cops and not all cops or government officials/worker accepts bribe.
Some foreigners are not even aware of the Philippines, and for you to paint such things, it will make an impact how bad your country is. Even if it is generally not the case.
Love for country is what our country needs. Thats why Thailand and Vietnam are now leading the pack towards development when in the 1980's it was the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore who are the leaders. Now we are in the bottom.
No one will be able to help us but ourselves. Concern for the country starts with us no one else.

well honey.. he maybe posted the wrong title of his discussion but this doesn't mean that he wanted to gain points..
oh well.. just to remind you that we are here to gain points and to earn money. he just wanted to share what had happened to him, and I think there's nothing wrong with it.. MYLOT is a site where we can share what had happened to us.. its a day to day discussion you know?..
I believe that he doesn't have the intention to insult our cops.. and he doesn't give a bad picture about our country.well, if we'll going to back read on what he wrote in there, he just narrate what had happened to him and doesn't give any bad comments about the cops who actually accept the money that he gave. neither he mentioned that all our cops accepts bribe. well, if you find it too insulting, I guess it's not his problem anymore.
Love for our country isn't enough. we have so much more to do to that can help with the progress of our country aside from loving it..
and..

The term loving it should not be taken in verbatim. It meant showing concern, being patriotic and that includes how we paint our countries image as well. We have already been tainted with so much bad publicity base on how the media tells the world about us. I said it is insulting because even us locals, add more to the bad press which does no good to help improve the country's image.
We often complain how poor we are, how the government does nothing to help improve on the quality of life but neither wants to accepts that all are contributors to such demise.
We often wonder why Thailand and Vietnam already left the pack. It is because the locals have concern or love their country enough to protect its image. You won't hear them discuss something that would bring bad image to their country. They are also very patriotic.
All may be here for the money. But also be cautious on the repercussion. I don't think you will allow want yourself to be ridiculed and insulted for a price, any price at that unless one is really desperate for money. Your ego wont allow you to be stomped on. Don't you think your country's ego should be treated the same way.
We are insulted when TV shows like Desperate Housewives made an insulting comment about the country. Fellow Filipinos even went to the extreme and picketed, asking for public apology and retraction. Have we ever consider that doing this discussion we are doing just the same. We are fueling negative views the world has on us.

well, i think it's ok to choose bribing that jerk traffic officer with 500 pesos than to have your license confiscated.

Here in the UK we wouldn't get away with that sort of thing. The polic officer would be much more upset about an attempted bibe than a silly traffic offence and the driver ould be in much more trouble for attempting to bribe a police officer than if he just plain admiotted the offence.
I realise there is a big difference btween traffic nforcers and police, maybe the police are more senior and get paid more and take their job very seriously?

honestly i think you did a wrong thing bribing the police officer..if one keeps on bribing how will bribery stop? you have putted a temptation to the officer and he grabbed the opportunity. afterwards what do you think will happen? all violators will just go and bribe him also or the officer will not issue violation tickets anymore and just asks for money. This is a form of corruption..how will you think corruption will stop if we tolerate it?
