Do You Take Action If You Disagree With Changes In your Local Area Or Keep Quiet

Our local town which has a lovely area called the Strand grassed with benches and beautiful flowers, memorial staue where on the 11th November every year we have a Rememberence parade and weekly the local farmers market is held and overall is a beautiful area surrounded by shading trees. This is going to become a pedestrianised paved shopping mall instead which isn't at all necessary. I'm off to a meeting to point my views across and maybe start a petition on the 25th June so I will take action to help prevent this happening. Do you take action if you disagree with planning proposals? Have you ever made a stand against something and won? Do you agree or disagree with me for wanting to take action against this? Would you like to make a difference but feel too shy to say something out loud at this type of meeting? Please share what you can here out of above questions. Many thanks. Ellie :D

Good for you Ellie , I think it is fantastic that you will make a stand against something you believe to be wrong and I have to say I agree with you on this one! I haven't actually opposed a proposed change but I have made a stand against the fact that the local bus route went down a very narrow street where the school kids come out and worse still the buses were always around when the kids went into school and also when they came out of school - I had seen a lot of near misses and knew it was only a matter of time before a child was seriously injured or killed, The school said they could do nothing about it so I made numerous calls to the council and eventually I found just the right person to help me! As well as the fact that the bus was a danger to the kids it was discovered that it shouldn't have been using that road anyway as it was far too narrow and the bus company and council were breaking the law by allowing it to take that route! Within a few weeks of starting my quest the bus had changed routes and there was a lot less danger to the kids going to and leaving school, I was really pleased with the result! xxx

I am a great believer in trying to find a solution to a problem instead of standing around complaining! Good Luck with your meeting honey - I am sure you will do great! xxx

Hi Mummymo, I feel the same as you and when someone moans to me about something I will say well instead of moaning do something about it or shut up. That sounds harsh but I am a firm believer in that just one person can make a difference if they put there mind to it just like you did with the bus route. Ellie :D

Hi Mummymo, That is absolutely fantastic what you have done there with the bus route and also the fact that this has prevented a young child getting injured or killed, on a lot of occasions things aren't changed until this happens which is sad. Well done you. I am looking forward to the meeting so that I can have my say along with many others I should think as there is no real need for this development at all. Ellie :D

There seems to be a never-ending list of things to petition about! This year is worse than ever!

I, like you, stand very solidly against changes in the community which I don't agree with. I don't always win, but I certainly make my point to the Parish Council, and have even led a campaign against changes. I began by circulating fly sheets and forming a committee, and inviting the local newspapers along. That one, we won, as a community but only because I had full support. Sometimes, the Council makes a decision before they put things to the vote, as they did recently, with the Village Hall, but again, I made my point to them. I didn't agree with the way they went about pushing things through. Now, they're in need of another £25,000 before they can start building the new, ugly, village hall, and I've refused to donate, merely because I didn't agree with it. They disallowed three postal votes, after counting, which would have said "No" to a new village hall, but with those discounted, it was passed by one vote. How much does that stink? They needn't come asking me for donations unless they want to hear my angry voice again. lol. Brightest Blessings my friend. I love those country markets, and hope you can keep it. xx

Hi Darkwing, Good for you for also making a stand on these things that matter to the people. I am sure there will be many people at this meeting and I am going to do a lot of background work on it before I attend but it will be such a shame to see this happen and also right in the heart of the town too. Hi Ellie-I admire you for taking a stand the way you are-where I live it used to be a little village now though you might as well call it village/town most of the green land has been built on houses mainly and by 2012 there will be even more housing etc so we will be a town--it is such a crying shame it is such a lovely place here even now where we still do have fields and walks but eventually I can see that all going--making a stand here though doesn't and hasn't done much good at all so I have given up trying the councils etc etc have made up their minds and there seems no way to stop what they want to do anymore but once again I admire you for your enthusiasm in making a stand for your land etc-your friend hugs bb littleowl

Hi Littleowl thanks for your support on this one and yes it is such a shame when all this green land is built over by concrete. In this situation it is not even buildings they are just going to pave the whole area, stopping traffic going through and getting rid of the beautiful centre green area. Ridiculous. We here because of the government have to build an extra 3000 bt that time too. Ellie :D

I always stand up for what I believe in, if injustice is being done I don't let it past the point of redemption. You should stand up, don't let them think they can do what they want, it may not help but in the end you can say you didn't approve.

Hi Gitfiddleplayer, Yes I think is important for the people to make a stand against changes they don't agree with. In this instance they are just paving the whole area which seems crazy when it is a beatiful outside area. Paving everything over in concrete also affects natural drainge so it will become more prone to flooding too. Wish me luck with it. Ellie :D

I love the area I live in and part of the attraction of it is the lovely green areas so I would be very upset to see any of them go. Thank you for sharing. Ellie :D

Well, that is a tough question for me. We are not from the area we live in. We have tried to make a difference here and have spoke up when need be. It has not done one bit of good for us. Everyone in this community are in it together and they do not welcome change or input from those of us who were not born and raised here. We have been here ten years now. We were told the first day we moved in, that we need to live here ten years before they will accept us. I would love to make a difference here but we are so outnumbered. The police and all of the local officals here stick together and they do not care what we say or ask for or do to better the community.

That is sad to hear. I have only lived in my town for about two and a half years but I already feel like a local as the people are so welcoming. I will go the meeting and I am sure there will be many others there too with the same view point as mine on this one. Ellie :D

I believe it will be wonderful if you will be able to stand in what you believe is good and for the betterment of the community! I am always like that, I can't just sit down and do nothing. When a lot of people will support, I know they will listen and consider your side!

You should be very proud of yourself for taking a stand for something you believe in. I have in the past also done this. I haven't started petition but have went to meetings if it personally effects my life. Sometimes change is good...but sounds like here they would be destroying something very special.

Oh yes sometimes change is good but in this instance it will actually be taking away the heart of the town and a special place for many. I am sure there are many others that will agree with my view at the meeting and hopefully the council will reconsider after this. Ellie :D

There are enough paved shopping malls without us needing more. I'm right behind you in opposing this scheme. Where I live just now there is very little development, but at my last home there was always someone wanting to do something, and not always something good. I did take part in meetings and petitions and other actions, but I'm ashamed to admit that it was normally only after someone else had started the ball rolling. One of the local planning applications was for a mast which was unnecessary. Someone else started the ball rolling, but I ended up doing all the behind the scenes admin for her to show my support. Good luck at your meeting.

Hi GreenMoo, You still tried to do something though which is the main thing rather than not at all. Yes I agree there are too many paved areas already and to ruin this beautiful spot just to pedestrianise the road around it is crazy. Thanks for the good luck wishes. Ellie :D

I tale a stand when something goes on in the family. If it concerns the community, I'm not good at following through on my actions. I'd more likely talk to my friends about it and share my opinions with them just like what you did here on myLot. But I don't like facing confrontations. I don't like the possibility of a bad publicity. I hope you don't get discouraged though, ellie. Good luck to your endeavors!
